    Summary

    This is the position of Information Technology Specialist (Front-End Software Developer) in the NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS) Project, High Energy Astrophysics Division of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. The ADS is building a highly scalable and feature-rich platform using a modern development stack: a custom build of the open-source search engine Solr, an advanced UI built with Backbone, a scalable asynchronous data ingestion pipeline with RabbitMQ and PostgreSQL, and cloud-based hosting of its services with Amazon Web Services. The primary programming languages are Python, Java, and JavaScript.



    The employee is a highly-motivated, UX-aware front-end developer interested in architecting and implementing key components of the user interface, including user profiles, notifications, and search capabilities. The developer is part of a small, agile team of talented, like-minded individuals who are solving difficult problems as a team.

    Responsibilities

The developer is part of a small, agile team of talented, like-minded individuals who are solving difficult problems as a team.


    1. Function as part of a team to develop new user-facing features for the ADS UI
    2. Write reusable code to support front-end applications
    3. Ensure the usability of all front-end applications
    4. Collaborate with other team members in the development of new capabilities and the maintenance of existing ADS services
    5. Perform other duties as may be required
