About the Position:
Located in the scenic Hudson River valley, only 50 miles from New York City, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point is a four-year academic institution, a nationally-renowned historic site, and the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. The undergraduates, known as cadets, are commissioned as officers in the US Army upon graduation. You can watch them on parade or competing as intercollegiate athletes in a wide range of sports events. As a military installation, West Point is a small, self-contained city with housing for the military stationed here in support of the Academy, a Department of Public Works to maintain the roads, grounds and facilities, two libraries (Academic and Community), a military hospital, fire department, chapels, restaurants. West Point's 3,000 civilian employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, the Hudson Valley's premiere performing arts center, and to recreational facilities such as an 18-hole Golf Course and Ski Slope.

You will serve as a Sewing Machine Operator in the Cadet Uniform Factory, located at United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point. You will operate a standard high-speed industrial sewing machine, performing a number of operations in the manufacture of items of the cadet uniform section work. Screen Out Element: The ability to perform the duties of a Sewing Machine Operator, WG-3111-03/04, position without more than normal supervision. The knowledge and ability to operate industrial sewing machines. Align and position materials to perform straight and slightly curved edge stitching. The ability to operate machines used for lock stitching, bartacking, zigzag stitching, and button sewing. Perform hand sewing and clean basting threads and clip long threads on completed garments. Fold and bundle or box completed items.
There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below. Your application will be further evaluated to determine if you meet the best qualified cut-off for referral to the selecting official.
You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies) in the following areas:
Physical Effort: Sits and/or stands for long periods of time with continued movement of hand, arms and fingers in placing items in position for sewing, ticketing or pressing. Handles pieces of fabric or articles of clothing that are relatively heavy and bulky.
Working Conditions: Shop is adequately lighted, ventilated and heated. Operators are subject to cuts, punctures, scratches, burns and other minor irritations and injuries from handling sharp tools and pressing equipment. Subject to allergies from dyes, dust, and lint from fabrics. Also, operators are subject to noise from sewing machines.
