The Alexandria VA Health Care System is seeking a Physician for Chief of Specialty Service to provide service to the Alexandria VA Health Care System including the Community Living Center (CLC). The Alexandria VA Health Care System, is a Joint Commission accredited, complexity level 3 facility serving Veterans within 23 of Louisiana’s 64 parishes. The Alexandria VAHCS is located in Pineville, Louisiana with community based outpatient clinics (CBOCs) in Jennings, Lake Charles, Lafayette, Fort Polk, and Natchitoches, Louisiana.

With a population of over 46,342, Alexandria continues to grow in every sector of our society. The city of Alexandria is adjacent to the city of Pineville and separated by the Red River. Alexandria sits on the central corridor of I-49 which makes it a quick access to several major Metro cities. Alexandria is only 2 hours from Shreveport, Louisiana, 3 1/2 hours from New Orleans, LA, and 4 1/2 hours from Dallas and Houston, Texas.

The incumbent will report directly to the Chief of Staff.

The incumbent will serve a one-year supervisory probationary period.

Duties

The Alexandria VA Health Care System (AVAHCS) is seeking a Chief of Specialty Care Service to join the Chief of Staff and Executive Leadership Team.  Specialty Care at the Alexandria VA Health Care System includes an advanced ambulatory surgery program and outpatient specialty clinics such as Speech Pathology, ENT, Orthopedics, Audiology, Opthalmology, and Optometry at the Pineville campus. Some specialty care is available at the AVAHCS Community Based Outpatient Clinics located in central and southern regions of Louisiana.

The incumbent will be reporting to the Chief of Staff (COS) and as a key resource to the facility leadership, the Chief of Specialty Service is responsible and accountable for the overall operations, quality of care, and performance of all Specialty Services at the Alexandria VA Health Care System (AVAHCS).  This key management position provides clinical and programmatic leadership to a multidisciplinary team of staff providing an array of specialty care services to eligible Veterans in the service area of the AVAHCS.  Incumbent responsibilities include but are not limited to, management and supervision of medical; planning and directing assigned Veteran specialty healthcare services; directing administrative and clinical functions of the Specialty Care Service; effectively collaborating with other healthcare providers to assure a seamless system of Veteran healthcare within and outside the VA; oversight and maintenance of all requirements of a VA Advanced ambulatory surgery program, outpatient subspecialty clinics; oversight responsibility for medical residents; and providing direct specialty healthcare services to eligible veterans in accordance with established privileges and medical staff policies and bylaws. He or she must have exemplary interpersonal skills, ability to successfully lead a multidisciplinary staff in the delivery of excellent health care to our nation's Veteran, and the ability to establish effective and collaborative relationships with primary care and other providers who refer Veterans to Specialty Services.  The Chief, Specialty Care Service, manages a personal panel of patients commensurate with clinical time allocation negotiated with the Chief of Staff.

The incumbent works closely with Quality Management, the Chief is expected to support and be actively involved in the establishment on policies and procedures.  The desired candidate will be board-certified and/or eligible with the American Board of Certification in their surgical subspecialty internal medicine or other subspecialties based on the needs of the Alexandria VA Health Care System. 

The incumbent will maintain a current advances Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications.

Work Schedule:  Monday – Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm (Additional hours may be necessary on emergent issues).

Preferred Experience and Qualifications:  It is preferred that the candidate have clinical and administrative experience in Specialty Care.  The desired candidate will be board-certified and/or with the American Board of Certification in their surgical subspecialty or other subspecialties based on the needs of the Alexandria VA Health Care System.  Incumbent will maintain a current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications.
