    Summary

    The Director for Preservation works under the general direction and supervision of the Associate Librarian and Deputy Associate Librarian for Library Services. The Director coordinates and oversees, within established Library policies and priorities, activities throughout the Library relating to the preservation and physical protection of Library materials, through binding, repairing, conserving, de-acidifying, reformatting, and environmental monitoring of collections or by other means depending on the nature of the material and its intended use.

    The salary range indicated reflects the locality pay adjustments for the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan area.

    The incumbent of this position will work a flextime work schedule.

    This is a supervisory, non-bargaining unit position.

    Responsibilities

    The Director has overall responsibility, as well as delegated authority, for the oversight and administration of broad, emerging, and/or critical agency programs or operations. Is responsible for the direction and management of the Library of Congress physical preservation program. Provides direction to the heads of the Binding and Collections Care Division, Preservation Research and Testing Division, Preservation Reformatting Division, and the Conservation Division.

    Directs Library-wide activities relating to physical preservation, conservation, and general maintenance of the Library's collection. Implements specialized programs for protection of the Library's general and special collections. Coordinates communication to the library community regarding information developed at the Library on the preservation of library materials.

    Serves as the primary advisor on various programs and events specifically in the area of preservation. Counsels senior management staff and officials at multiple levels of the Library of Congress; senior staff of the Directorate, other government agencies; and private sector clients and vendors on preservation matters. Advises on the appropriate methods and techniques to use in order to achieve program goals and objectives. Serves on inter-agency, national, and/or international special work groups, task forces, or expert panels on special projects or studies critical to the resolution of far-reaching preservation issues and problems.

    Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with various high-level individuals, other legislative and executive agencies, executives of major corporations, professional associations, NGOs and foundations, and members of the public. Establishes and maintains close and cooperative working relationships with other service unit managers as well as other government agencies and other institutions with related interests, in order to advance the preservation programs and objectives of the Library.

    Establishes performance expectations for the four Division chiefs of the Directorate. Provides informal feedback and periodically evaluates staff on organizational performance. Provides advice and counsel to staff members and subordinate managers. Effects disciplinary measures. Reviews and approves or disapproves leave requests, telework, and other work-related arrangements.
