OIG is organized into three line elements: the Offices of Investigations, Audits and Evaluations, and Healthcare Inspections; along with the Office of Contract Review and the Office of Management and Administration. In addition to the Washington, DC, headquarters, OIG has offices located in more than 30 cities throughout the country.
The Criminal Investigator, located in the Office of Investigations, investigates crimes committed against programs and operations of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and allegations of serious violations of policies and procedures by VA employees. OI is composed of four divisions: Criminal Investigations, Administrative Investigations, Investigative Data Systems and Analysis, and Analysis and Oversight.
As a Criminal Investigator, you will:
- Plan, manage and conduct, independently or as a team leader, highly complex, sensitive and difficult criminal investigations.
- Assist the Special Agent in Charge (SAC), Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC), or the Resident Agent in Charge (RAC) in the day-to-day operation and management of the Field Office or Resident Agency.
- Initiate contacts with Federal, state, and local law enforcement officials, civic and business leaders, officials from financial institutions, medical facilities, and other organizations and individuals for the purpose of obtaining facts, signed statements, and developing investigative leads and cooperation.
- Search crime scenes for evidence, record the crime scene through photography and sketches, collect and preserve physical evidence as mandated by OIG policies.
25% or less - Travel nationwide under tight deadlines. The incumbent should anticipate frequent walking and standing as a component of this travel.
