This position is located within the Morphology Unit of the Forensics Branch at the Clark R. Bavin National Fish and Wildlife Forensics Laboratory with the Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) in Ashland, Oregon. The mission of the Forensics Lab is to provide scientific support to federal wildlife crime investigations, for example by identifying wildlife evidence items to species or subspecies; determining cause of death of animal remains, and analyzing and comparing physical evidence that may link suspect, victim, and crime scene. The Forensic Scientist (Mammalogy) conducts examination of a wide variety of evidence types representing a diverse array of North American and international mammal species, prepares analytical reports, and conducts technical reviews of analytical reports and related case notes.
Annual Salary Range - Employees new to the Federal service begin at step 1
GS-09: step 1 $48,968 - step 10 $63,654
GS-11: step 1 $ 59,246 - step 10 $ 77,019

Conduct forensic examinations or comparisons of a wide range of evidence items to identify mammal remains from all regions of the world to species.
Determine the species, minimum number of individuals, age, and gender of mammals in evidence assemblages.
Assist in developing, modifying and verifying new analytical procedures in the field of morphology to identify evidence items, including whole carcasses, parts and pieces, and products made from mammals.
Testify in criminal court proceedings and civil administration hearings as an expert witness in forensic mammalogy.
Acquire, verify, document and store known reference specimens which are essential for morphological identifications of mammal at the laboratory.
Interpret and report analytical findings for rapid utilization by law enforcement personnel.
