You will serve as a Staff Dental Assistant (DA) within the Dental Service of the Robley Rex VA Medical Center (VAMC). The DA will provide routine patient care and a full range of duties with indirect supervision from the dental supervisor or the treating dentist. Below is a sample breakdown of duties:

Digital Radiology

Utilization of digital radiology equipment to produce diagnostic dental radiographs with adherence to safety and infection control protocols.

Chair side Assisting

Sets up operatory and/or surgery suite for planned dental procedures and cleans dental unit in accordance with infection control policies for timely turn over. Passes instruments safely, accurately and efficiently. Keeps operative field clear of debris and retracts oral tissues effectively and comfortably. Working knowledge of dental materials and prepares dental medicaments and impression materials per manufacturer's instructions. Assists in routine and specialized dental procedures using four-handed dentistry concepts. Assists in specialized dental procedures, such as oral surgery, periodontics, endodontics, prosthodontics, implant placement and advanced restorative procedures. Maintains both routine and specialty dental equipment per manufacturer instructions and dental service standards.

Direct Patient Care

Applies topical anesthetic at injection site, dispenses fluoride rinse per provider instructions, makes impressions for diagnostic cast and custom prosthetic trays. Provides patient preventative education, oral hygiene instructions, and provides post-operative instructions.

Clerical Functions

Assists dentist in charting findings and treatment plans in electronic patient records, assist in scheduling patients and ensures prosthesis are completed prior to patient's scheduled appointment. Maintains patient confidentiality with written and verbal information per HIPAA protocol. Schedules patient appointments and prepares daily schedules using computerized systems.

Physical Requirements:

The Dental Assistant position requires long periods of standing, walking, sitting and bending are required. Some light lifting is also required.
