The Director, Office of Safety Programs is responsible for leading and directing safety programs with a mission to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities across the Nation’s highway system.
In this role, the Director leads a safety program to identify ways to reduce injuries and fatalities on the Nation’s highways. As the Director, Office of Safety Programs, the individual will:
- Lead and direct a staff of highway safety experts in developing and implementing national safety initiatives and policies, data-driven approaches, and identifying and deploying innovative technologies to reduce roadway injuries and fatalities.
- Establish strategic highway safety plans and performance measures for safety-related programs implemented across all 52 States and territories. Provides executive leadership and guidance to all State DOTs on improving safety performance on the national highway system.
- Serve as the national authority to promote and coordinate FHWA and DOT highway safety initiatives to save lives including managing and administering the $1.3 billion Highway Safety Improvement Program.
- Collaborate with FHWA Headquarters program offices and field offices, other DOT operating administrations, State DOT and local government officials, transportation industry representatives, and safety advocates to address cross modal transportation safety issues.
