Appointments made under this announcement are limited to 1039 hours (six months) in a service year and may be terminated at any time. Appointments under this announcement are eligible for rehire and/or extension (when initial appointment is less than 1039 hours) if workload and funding allow. Cape Cod National Seashore is located on the outer edge of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. South Wellfleet, site of park headquarters, is located 27 miles from Hyannis and 100 miles from Boston. The park is known for its beautiful ocean beaches, fresh water ponds, marshes, bay beaches, woodlands, and dunes. Cape Cod has a rich cultural history, and the "lower" Cape is home to many art galleries, museums, and regional theaters. Orleans, located about seven miles from South Wellfleet, is the principle shopping area providing all normal services. Shared government housing may be available, however it is not guaranteed. No pets are allowed in seasonal housing.
The park has a two-site RV camping area located in Wellfleet, with full hookups for employees on a first-come, first served basis. The RV shall be a fully functioning unit as designed by the original manufacturer, shall be connected to water/sewage/power utilities via standard fittings/connectors, and all systems shall be operational with no leaks. The incumbant may be assigned duties in the North District (Truro/Provincetown), or South District (Eastham/Wellfleet), a distance of approximately 35-miles, and area of assignment is not guaranteed. Major duties include performing law enforcement duties such as patrol operations, criminal and accident investigations, crime prevention, public safety and visitor use management. Provides EMS to sick and injured persons. Enforcement of criminal laws of the United States through investigation, apprehension, education, and detention of individuals suspected or convicted of violating these laws. Appropriate enforcement to protect the park's natural, cultural, historical, and human resources occupies a substantial portion of the Ranger's working time, and is assigned on a regular and recurring basis.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT Duties involve rigorous fieldwork requiring above average physical performance, endurance and superior conditioning. Work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying of items weighing over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items, and similar strenuous activities requiring agility and dexterity. Duties involve performing physically rigorous assignments, often in isolated outdoor environments while exposed to severe weather conditions. Dangerous persons must be physically confronted, subdued, and apprehended many of whom are known to carry weapons. There is a high-stress component associated with much of the incumbent's work assignments. Physical fitness requirements must be met prior to a and on a continuing basis during employment.
