As a BJS supervisory statistician, you will: (1) initiate, formulate, plan, and execute one or more of BJS's statistical series or statistical programs;(2) analyze data and report statistical information from one or more of BJS's statistical series or statistical programs; (3) supervise a group of Statisticians working at up to the GS-14 level providing the administrative and technical supervision necessary for accomplishing the work of the statistical unit; and (4) represent BJS before a wide variety of stakeholders at the national, state, and local levels that include users of BJS's statistical information and providers of data to BJS's statistical programs. BJS is looking for candidates with considerable knowledge and experience across all operational aspects of criminal justice data collections and statistical analysis at federal, state, Tribal and local governmental levels. In particular, we seek candidates who can effectively maintain existing core and establish new programs in the: (1) law enforcement, (2) prosecution and courts, and (3) institutional research and special projects units.

Supervises a group of employees performing work at the GS-14 level. Provides administrative and technical supervision necessary for accomplishing the work of the unit.
Performs the administrative and human resource management functions relative to the staff supervised. Plans, schedules, and assigns work to subordinates. Establishes guidelines and performance expectations for staff members; provides feedback and periodically evaluates employee performance. Provides advice, counsel, and/or instruction to staff members. Recommends or approves appointments, selections, or reassignments to positions appropriate to the selection authority delegated. Effects disciplinary measures as appropriate to the authority delegated in this area. Carries out Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies and program activities.
Manages, leads, or performs scientific work in applying statistical theories, techniques, and methods for gathering, studying, analyzing, interpreting, and reporting on statistically quantified information.
Performs statistical data collection requirements activities, such as preparing, processing, and coordinating ad hoc and standing collection requirements. Ensures the collection of statistical data and use of collection systems to satisfy immediate, mid-range, and long-term statistical data collection requirements.
Provides technical guidance to contractors or grantees on documentation requirements including problem reports and troubleshooting plans. Ensures the contractor/grantee performs in accordance with established procedures and that statistical research conforms to established specifications and requirements.
Consults and collaborates with governmental officials, professional associations, and others to advise on the application of statistics to criminal justice issues, policies, and programs.
Develops and follows best practices related to data collection, analysis and dissemination including adhering to White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) guidelines and directives, and data collection requirements associated with the Paperwork Reduction Act.
Occasional travel - 4 times per quarter
