    Summary

    Serves as Geo-microbiologist and/or Astro-biologist Specialist for the study and curation of planetary geological samples in the Astromaterials Acquisition and Curation Office. Responsible for maintenance of scientific credentials through participation in technical professional activities that include research and authorship of peer-reviewed scientific reports, and scientific service through activities such as student mentoring and service on scientific panels.

    Responsibilities

    Serves as Geo-microbiologist and/or Astro-biologist Specialist for the study and curation of planetary geological samples in the Astromaterials Acquisition and Curation Office. Responsible for maintenance of scientific credentials through participation in technical professional activities that include research and authorship of peer-reviewed scientific reports, and scientific service through activities such as student mentoring and service on scientific panels.

    Specifically:

    -Contributes to advanced curation research of extraterrestrial samples in the field of astro-biology and geo-microbiology, including the chemical, mineralogical, or petrological consequences of microbial interaction with extraterrestrial samples, planetary geological sample simulants, and terrestrial analogs of planetary geological samples.

    -Develops methods of monitoring for biological contamination within curation facilities and in NASA¿s planetary geological sample collections, and specifies technical requirements for curatorial laboratories and documentation systems in support of biological aspects of extraterrestrial sample curation.

    -Implements curation plan for planetary geological samples returned from future missions with possible extraterrestrial biological components.

    -Serves as NASA's point of contact for potential biological concerns regarding the handling and curation of planetary geological samples.

    -Oversees the deployment and archival of all mission materials, including witness plates and materials blanks, in addition to the samples that are relevant to potential biological extraterrestrial samples.

    -Defines technical requirements and contributes to curation-relevant organic contamination control for future sample return missions with possible biological components, including the long-term storage, transport, containment, preservation, and curation of returned materials.

    -Provides expertise in the area of contamination knowledge as it relates to biological cleanliness of NASA spacecraft at all stages of development, including assembly, test, and launch operations.

    -Develops, communicates and implements curation strategy for returned samples with biological components and contributes to curation decisions regarding allocation and distribution of samples.

    - Serves as an agency authority, recognized by scientific peers, in the field of geo-microbiology or astrobiology.
