    This position will serve on a crew of 4-6 persons in the implementation of the district’s annual plan of work associated with timber sales, developed and dispersed recreation areas, trails, wilderness, special interest areas, reforestation, timber stand improvement, wildlife and fisheries, watershed improvement, fleet and facilities, roads, prescribed fire, wildland fire, range, oil/gas and minerals, special uses, signs, cultural resources and others.

    The USDA Forest Service has legislative authority to recruit and fill Permanent (Career/Career-Conditional), Temporary, and Term Appointments under the USDA Demonstration Project. Under this authority, any U.S. citizen may apply.

    Duties listed are at the full performance level (GS-6):

    Timber cruising operations: prepares, develop, and executes timber cruises and sample surveys to develop resource information and estimate quality and quantity of timber for purpose of appraisal, sales administration, management planning, and logging plans.  Independently marks trees using and adapting complex marking rules in areas complicated by variations in type, species composition, defect, site, age, class, etc.

    Timber sale preparation: independently lays out sales in accordance with EA and other instructions, considering variables such as accessibility, steep slopes, stream protection, nesting tree protection, wildlife impacts, fuels management, regeneration requirements and Forest Plan guidelines.

    Wildland fire and prescribed burning: on a prescribed fire crew, performs prescribed fire operations including direction and participation in preparation, ignition, monitoring, holding and mop up.  Serves as a wildland firefighter on a handcrew. 

    Recreation/wilderness/trails support: Assists in the implementation of recreation operation and maintenance plans for developed and dispersed recreation sites. Assists with the maintenance of district recreation facilities such as trails, toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, barriers, dumpsters and other miscellaneous structures. 
    Wildlife/PETS/range program support: Prepares and analyzes plant samples.  Compiles and summarizes vegetation types obtained from ground surveys, including forest health monitoring and biological evaluations. Performs established wildlife-related assignments. Assignments may involve constructing or completing habitat projects such as clearing areas to establish more desirable food or cover habitat.  Collects and analyzes data through a variety of techniques and develops reports on the characteristics and quality of samples from field tests.

    Occasional travel - Travel may be required for meetings, training, and other mission related work.
