Air Reserve Technicians (ARTs) are part of the regular civil service and enjoy all the benefits granted to Federal employees in the competitive civil service. In addition, ARTs are required to maintain active membership in an Air Force Reserve unit so long as they occupy ART positions. As members of reserve units, ARTs receive on average one weekend of military training per month. In addition, they are eligible for 15 days active duty tour each year for which military leave is granted with full civilian pay. Air Force Reserve units and members are subject to immediate call to active duty in mobilization to meet a national emergency.

The primary purpose of this position is as an Air Reserve Technician (ART) to gain experience and training to become a fully qualified mission-ready pilot in the unit type aircraft. Position also accomplishes a variety of administrative duties related to flight/mission accomplishment such as scheduling, mission planning, AFRC operational training, and mission management. Upon successful completion of training requirements, and a display of successful performance, the incumbent may be noncompetitively promoted. The target grade of the position is GS-12 Airplane Pilot. Incumbent of this position will perform the following duties: Under the guidance and assistance of the aircraft commander/flight instructor and in the role of a pilot, assist in the operation of aircraft in order to gain the experience needed to become a qualified pilot in the unit aircraft.Participate in discussions, meetings or serve on panels or committees regarding unit aircraft and flying mission.Perform and assist with other flight related duties supporting the accomplishment of the unit operational and training mission.
Occasional travel - Incumbent may be required to fly in a military and/or commercial aircraft to perform temporary/permanent duty assignments.
