Air Reserve Technicians (ARTs) are part of the regular civil service and enjoy all the benefits granted to Federal employees in the competitive civil service. In addition, ARTs are required to maintain active membership in an Air Force Reserve unit so long as they occupy ART positions. As members of reserve units, ARTs receive on average one weekend of military training per month. In addition, they are eligible for 15 days active duty tour each year for which military leave is granted with full civilian pay. Air Force Reserve units and members are subject to immediate call to active duty in mobilization to meet a national emergency.

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as an Air Reserve Technician (ART) Airplane Pilot in the unit aircraft. Position also accomplishes a variety of administrative duties related to flight/mission accomplishment such as scheduling, mission planning, operational training, and mission management. Upon successful completion of training requirements, satisfaction of time-in-grade requirements and a display of successful performance, the incumbent may be noncompetitively promoted to the target position of GS-2181-12, Airplane Pilot. Subject position is part of a developmental Airplane Flight Instructor Program, which provides employees with training and valuable experience that, serves as the recruitment pool from which GS-13 Airplane Flight Instructors are selected. Incumbent of this position will perform the following duties:
- Under the guidance and assistance of the aircraft commander/flight instructor, operate aircraft to become a fully qualified, mission-ready pilot in unit type aircraft.
- Participate in discussions, meetings or serves on panels or committees regarding unit aircraft and flying mission.
- Perform other flight related duties supporting the accomplishment of the unit operational and training mission.
Occasional travel - Incumbent may be required to fly in a military and/or commercial aircraft to perform temporary/permanent duty assignments.
