About the Position:
Works under general supervision of maintenance supervisor who makes assignments in the form of work orders or oral instructions which may include blueprints, sketches or other specifications. Work is occasionally spot checked for adequacy and completeness. Incumbent is responsible for determining work methods, laying out work, and completing assignments in accordance with oral and written instructions, available guides, and trade techniques.

Fabricate, install and repair steel framework and other metal parts of locks and dams, barges, boats, buildings, towers and all types of structures and equipment.
Install, construct, fabricate and repair platforms, catwalks-grating, ladders, ladder cages, pump foundations, motor mounts, handrails and steps, and other structures in support of the navigation mission.
Develop plans, and templates or fixtures. Lay out the work, construct, assemble, and install the entire system. Work with various types of ferrous and nonferrous metals such as aluminum, stainless steel, cast iron or steel, wrought iron, brass and copper.
Evaluate structural damage done in order to plan and play out repair and modification projects.
Read sketches, blueprints and/or other specifications and determines welding methods and techniques.
Fabricate jigs or fixtures to be used on special jobs; performs flame cutting on boiler tubes on heating equipment maintenance jobs; repairs steam lines by cutting out a section and installing couplings; cuts out damaged sections of old boilers and replaces damaged area with mild steel plate which requires close fitting and welding in place.
Operate gasoline and electric welding machines to weld various types of commonly used metals and alloys of various sizes, shapes and thicknesses.
Perform operator maintenance.
Occasional travel - 10% TDY may be required.
