The goal of this program is to establish and maintain an outreach program to assist those eligible veterans (WW II, Korean War, Vietnam era, Lebanon, Grenada, and Panama conflicts, Persian Gulf War and GWOT veterans), who have failed to make adequate psychosocial adjustment and re-entry into civilian life.

Additional responsibilities may include Bereavement Counseling and Sexual Trauma Counseling (approved by RCS Northeast Regional Office ARM/C).  May conduct interviews and counseling with clients and provide psychological assessment and treatment to clients.  Readjustment counseling interventions include crisis intervention and both short and long-term services.  Refers clients to other programs and professionals, as needed.  Provide consultation to other team members conducting interviews, counseling and therapy.  Refers cases requiring outpatient or inpatient treatment to the VA Medical Center or Outpatient Clinic.  Provides psychodiagnosis testing and psychological assessment to those clients who display clinically severe or unusual psychological disturbances.  Personally conducts any or all of the following therapy programs: stress management; individual, group, conjoint and family therapy; biofeedback; relaxation training and other therapeutic intervention strategies.  Participates in conjoint emergency treatment with medical facility mental health personnel.  

Specific clinical/therapeutic tasks of the Readjustment Counseling Therapist include, but are not limited to:

·         Personally conducting social/ psychological assessments.

·         Independently providing highly skilled readjustment counseling services to clients with difficult and complex problems of social, emotional and vocational adjustment.

·         Organizing counseling groups and functions as facilitator or therapist for counseling groups.

·         As needed during the treatment process, assisting clients with applications for veterans' benefits and helping clients complete and channel VA documents and forms.

·         Conducting follow-up of clients by telephone and/or mail.

·         Serving as consultant to professional nurses, clinical social workers, psychologists, physicians and staff at the support facility.  The incumbent is recognized as highly knowledgeable and skilled in the treatment of Vietnam era and post combat veterans and plays a key role in the total mental health program.

·         Developing and maintaining appropriate referral sources.

·         Referring clients to appropriate resource persons and agencies.

·         Serving as an alternate technical representative for the fee/contracts program. Duties in this capacity include Contracting Officer Alternate Technical Representative of review panel, liaison with service providers, and certification of clients for the program and case management of the referrals.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm, some nights and weekends, subject to change based on Agency needs.
