    This position is located in the Collections, Museum Assets and Operations Division; Cultural Resources Center (CRC), National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), Smithsonian Institution. The employee directs and oversees all aspects of storage, access, care, preservation, use, disaster management planning, and registration activities for NMAI’s collection in all three NMAI facilities including NMAI-DC, NMAI-NY, and NMAI CRC.

    • Responsible for the overall safe and proper storage, housing, handling, moving, packing, shipping and integrated pest management of NMAI’s collections at its three facilities, as well as overseeing collections management’s participation in the installation and deinstallation of museum exhibits.
    • Applies knowledge of the principles, practices, and theories pertinent to museum work such as ethical, legal, and fiduciary responsibilities, federal repatriation legislation and related NMAI legislation to ensure that collections are properly managed.
    • Oversees collections movement within and outside of NMAI facilities by ensuring staff adherence to policies, procedures and protocols for object packing and object movement through use of equipment such as SI vehicles, lifts or carts and the tracking of the movement using NMAI’s barcode scanning technology.
    • Works with Native people from throughout the Western Hemisphere and prioritizes collections access for Native people whose collections NMAI stewards. This requires experience working with Native peoples whether through the incumbent’s former work experience or research/fieldwork with a focus on ethnographic, archeological and contemporary Native art and repatriation issues.
    • Represents the Museum to representatives of the Native American community, tribal officials, other museums and galleries, national and international governments, private foundations or cultural institutions, scholars of all disciplines. Contacts with the White House and Congressional Staff are not unusual for the purpose of affording access to the collections and explaining the needs of stewardship for nation’s collections.
    • Supervises two subordinate supervisors and several non-supervisory positions. Performs such tasks as developing and implementing yearly performance plans and completing performance evaluations for direct reports, serving as a reviewing official for plans and appraisals for staff reporting to subordinate supervisors, and working with NMAI HR staff to develop recruitment materials to fill departmental vacancies as they develop.
