This position is located in the Archives, Museum Assets and Operations Division; National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), Smithsonian Institution. The employee is responsible for coordinating reference service for NMAI archival collections, as well as fulfilling rights, permissions, and reproduction orders.Learn more about this agency
- Serves as the NMAI archives’ primary point of contact for reference service, handling all reference room activities including staffing, scheduling researchers, maintaining registration and related researcher orientation activities, and ensuring the retrieval and return of collections materials. Assists researchers to determine the most effective approach to specific projects and recommends collections to use.
- Responds to remote reference inquiries via email and telephone, provides timely responses to inquiries, archival collections information, and links to online resources; and assists in scheduling on-site research appointments.
- Reviews rights and reproduction requests to ensure compliance with copyright law, donor restrictions, and other intellectual property or contractual concerns; ensures that right and reproduction requests adhere to NMAI’s culturally sensitive collections access policies.
- Manages the NMAI archives’ rights and reproductions function which includes review, evaluation, approval, and processing of requests for permission to reproduce NMAI still images and audiovisual collections for research, publication, production, exhibition, presentation, online, and other purposes. Oversight includes managing the rights and reproductions function as a cost center.
