Physical Science Aids and Technicians work with Geologists, Physical Scientists, and other professionals performing a wide variety of tasks associated with field studies. The work is performed outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; positions require physical exertions, such as, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Individuals should be capable of working alone, or with other people, during early morning hours, night, or during the day.

To qualify for the GS-06 level, applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-5 level. Examples of specialized experience may include conducting a substantial variety of tests for qualitative and quantitative determinations of various elements found in sewage and selecting appropriate test procedures; and making various determinations such as nitrogen, carbon, iron, ferric chloride, magnesium or potash content in sewage, sludge and filter cake or performing other chemical tests of similar difficulty; OR successful completion of one full year (27 quarter or 18 semester hours) of graduate education directly related to the work of the position; OR a combination of experience and education to meet total experience.
You must meet the qualification requirements to be found qualified. GS-3 Physical Science Aid - 6 months of general experience; OR successful completion of one year (45 quarter or 30 semester hours) of study above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering or any branch of mathematics except financial and commercial mathematics; OR a combination of experience and education to meet the total experience. GS-4 Physical Science Technician - 6 months of general and 6 months of specialized experience. Examples of specialized experience may include taking samples of dust, air, water , soil, grass, etc. from a variety of sites and utilizing various detection devices to examine samples taken; and ascertaining whether samples are within established levels and reporting information to supervisor; OR successful completion of two years (90 quarter or 60 semester hours) of study above high school which includes at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as: physical science, engineering or any branch of mathematics except financial and commercial mathematics; OR a combination of experience and education to meet the total experience. GS-5 Physical Science Technician - one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level. Examples of specialized experience may include testing a variety of items such as paper, textiles, polyethylene sheeting, rubber hose, burlap and other similar materials under normal atmospheric conditions to assure they meet established specifications; and preparing samples and operating equipment such as spectrograph and a gas chromatograph to perform chemical analyses of a variety of materials or performing other tests of similar difficulty; OR successful completion of a full four year (180 quarter or 120 semester hours) course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in an appropriate field of physical science or that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering or any branch of mathematics except financial and commercial mathematics; OR a combination of experience and education to meet the total experience. GS-6 Physical Science Technician - one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level. Examples of specialized experience may include conducting a substantial variety of tests for qualitative and quantitative determinations of various elements found in sewage and selecting appropriate test procedures; and making various determinations such as nitrogen, carbon, iron, ferric chloride, magnesium or potash content in sewage, sludge and filter cake or performing other chemical tests of similar difficulty; OR successful completion of one-half year (13.5 quarter or 9 semester hours) of graduate education directly related to the work of the position; OR a combination of experience and education to meet the total experience. GS-7 Physical Science Technician - one year of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-6 level. Examples of specialized experience may include work in a metallurgical laboratory , serving as a technician responsible for the full range of metallurgical working testing activities at the facility; and performing Rockwell hardness tests, preparing metallographic samples, or other testing of similar difficulty; OR successful completion of one year (27 quarter or 18 semester hours) of graduate education directly related to the work of the position; OR a combination of experience and education to meet the total experience.
