JOB SUMMARY:

Civilian employees serve a vital role in supporting the Army mission. They provide the skills that are not readily available in the military, but crucial to support military operations. The Army integrates the talents and skills of its military and civilian members to form a Total Army.

About the Position:
This position is with the Quality Assurance Directorate, Nondestructive Test Division, at the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant (MCAAP) located in McAlester, Oklahoma. MCAAP was originally commissioned as the Naval Ammunition Depot McAlester on May 20, 1943 and began its first production in September 1943. In October 1977 the naval facility was transferred to the Army under the Single Manager for Conventional Ammunition act. Red River Munitions Center (Red River, Texas) was transferred to MCAAP in October 1999. MCAAP is a government-owned/government-operated facility. Our operating hours are from 6:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. We are closed on federal holidays. The mission of MCAAP is to produce and renovate quality conventional missile ammunition and ammunition-related components, perform engineering and product assurance in support of production, and receive, store, ship, demilitarize and dispose of conventional and missile ammunition and related items.

    •  Performs x-ray and other nondestructive testing on ammunition, ammunition components and other explosives to determine functionality and acceptability.
    •  Operates various testing equipment to perform nondestructive tests on ammunition and ammunition components.
    •  Calculates equipment settings and tolerance to obtain desired/required special resolution, contrast, sensitivity and magnification.
    •  Performs trial exposures for technique development and evaluation of test.
    •  Develops identification system for tracking and marking material and identifying accept/reject determination.

    Physical effort: The physical demands of this position range from light to heavy in physical exertions due to the equipment set-up requirements, type of materials and components. Work may require long periods of standing and walking. Occasionally required to stoop, bend, kneel and work in tiring or uncomfortable positions. Mental alertness, manual dexterity and good eyesight are required. Incumbent is required to pass examination for color vision and for near vision.
    Working Conditions: Subject to numerous hazardous conditions due to handling or association with chemicals, explosive munitions and radiographic elements. Included are toxic and skin irritating chemcials, fire hazards, explosive munitions and injurious rays (x-ray, laser). Most of the incumbents work will be performed indoors in well lighted, heated and ventilated buildings. Some ofthe work will be performed outdoors on a live fire test range. Incumbent is subject to moderate exposure to rain, cold/hot weather, noise and fumes from test operations. Wears protective devices such as hearing protection, protective footwear, laser eyewear and safety glasses.

    • This position requires incumbent to obtain and maintain an Arms, Ammunition and Explosives Security Certification and Screening.
    • This position requires the incumbent to be certified Level 2 in Radiographic Testing (RT) under the National Aerospace Standard, NAS 410 or American Society for Nondestructive Testing Standard, ASNT CP-189.
    • This position requires a Confidential Security Clearance.
    • This position is subject to the Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968 which makes it a felony for anyone who has been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony crime of domestic violence to ship, transport, possess or receive firearms or ammunition.
