The Physician position is located in the Specialty Care Service in Honolulu, Hawaii.  The incumbent serves as an Orthopedic Physician providing outpatient care for adult patients.  Duties include, but are not limited to:


       Provide orthopedics medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis, care, and treatment of patients with disorders of the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, nerves, and skin.  These elements make up the musculoskeletal system.

       Involvement in all aspects of heath care pertaining to the musculoskeletal system. They use medical, physical, and rehabilitative methods as well as surgery.

       Work closely with other health care professionals and often serves as a consultant to other physicians. Orthopaedic surgeons play an important role in the organization and delivery of emergency care. They are members of the teams that manage complex, multi-system trauma.

       Travel to CBOCs to provide orthopedic specialty care to patients.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Moderate lifting, 15-44 pounds; light lifting, under 15 pounds; light carrying, under 15 pounds; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; standing (4 hours); both legs required; both eyes required; ability to distinguish basic colors; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aid permitted); disinfecting wipes; hand sanitizer; travel throughout Pacific Rim.

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following:

Basic Requirements:


·       U.S. citizenship (Non-citizens may be appointed only if it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens)

·       Degree of doctor of medicine resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine obtained from a school approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.

·       Completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.

·       Possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.

·       Meet the physical standards – VA Directive and Handbook 5019.

·       Subject to drug testing.

·       Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C 7402(d).

·       Must be board eligible/board certified.


Preferred Experience: Board Certified.
