  • Plans, directs, monitors, and manages the operations of a zone involving 10-60 building and facilities services, custodial, laborer, material handling, and equipment operating staff.
  • Assists in the day-to-day oversight of a large cleaning operation, labor and moving services, special event coordination, material handling, and heavy equipment operation and services.
  • Performs supervisory functions such as developing performance plans and standards; evaluating, training, counseling and coaching staff; ensuring staff safety, explaining Smithsonian and OFMR goals, policies, and procedures; resolving informal complaints or grievances, and initiating personnel actions.
  • Coordinates with customers, contractors, other units of OFEO, and other building/zone staff; determines the materials, and number and type of workers needed to complete immediate and long-range work.

Physical Requirements: This position requires the physical ability to perform moderately heavy work including lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 50 lbs.; work outside in all weather conditions with exposure to dirt, dust, pollen and insects; climb ladders and stairs; and stand and walk for extended periods.

How you will be evaluated: Applications will first be evaluated to determine whether the following screen out element is met:

  1. Ability to lead or supervise the work of a multi-discipline staff of wage professionals such as building and facilities services workers, equipment operators, and material handling workers to ensure the work has been completed.
If an applicant meets the screen-out element, the following Job Elements will be evaluated:
  1. Knowledge of work practices (includes maintaining facilities in a neat, clean, and orderly manner).
  2. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, and policies.
  3. Ability to drive and operate safely (motor vehicles, mobile equipment etc.).
  4. Ability to operate safely (non-motor vehicles).
  5. Ability to execute and demonstrate reliability and dependability as a Facilities Services Supervisor.
