About the Agency

This position serves as the Head of the Radiological Support Division (Code 105.4) in the Radiological Office at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. 


Salary will be increased by the applicable cost-of-living allowance (COLA); which is subject to change without notice.

Your duties as a Supervisory Health Physicist or Supervisory Nuclear Engineer at the GS-14 level include, but are not limited to the following:

·       Managing the development and conducting radiological control training programs;

·       Developing the scope and content of radiological control training;

·       Determining programs, projects or major radiological training to support the Shipyard work;

·       Providing and exercising direct administrative and technical supervision.

You must meet one of the Office of Personnel Management basic education requirements for the 0840 or 1306 occupational series:


A. 0840-Professional Engineering Series - Degree: I have completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a professional engineering degree. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science of physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics; or electronics.

B. 0840-Professional Engineering Series - Substitution of Education/Experience: I have a combination of education and experience: college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering; and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following: (a) professional registration, (b) evidence of successfully passing the Engineer-In-Training (EIT) examination; (c) successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified in 2. A above; or (d) successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering technology or in an appropriate professional field, e.g., physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a degree in engineering, provided that it included at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. (Note to Applicants: Please see the Qualifications & Education sections of this announcement for a link to the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) Individual Occupational Requirements. OPM guidance indicates that there should be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering-type experience. This training plan or experience must be well documented and provided at time of application.)

C. 1306-Health Physics Series - Degree: I have a degree in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

D. 1306-Health Physics Series - Substitution of Education/Experience: I have a combination of education and experience -- courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described above.

In addition to meeting the Basic Education requirements above, applicants must have specialized experience as described below: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-13) in the federal service as a professional nuclear engineer or health physicist planning, managing or administrating a radiological control training program. This experience would typically include: developing radiological control policies and procedures for a training program; assessing training needs for radiological control program; developing or implementing innovative training techniques and concepts; managing and maintaining radiological training.

Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

Volunteer work helps build critical compentencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
