  • Performs maintenance of the museum's campus ensuring an overall pristine and polished area. Spot checks and corrects own work. Take ownership and initiative in completing work assignments.
  • Cleans/mops bathrooms, vacuums and cleans corridors/entrance ways, stairways and other important areas within the campus.
  • Performs snow, trash and other debris removal.
  • Perform special facilities management support including painting, protection of objects and other assignments as needed.
  • Work on a wide variety of facility management projects as request by his/her supervisor.
  • Works independently as well as part of a team. Communicates and provides excellent customer service to all staff members.
  • Serves as a rotating driver for the museum’s operating van (driving up to 15 staff/visitors to Newark, New Jersey from the main campus).

In order to be rated qualified, an applicant's overall experience and training must indicate possession of the minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the duties of this position.

Physical Effort:
Work involves lifting and moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Moderately heavy physical effort is required in moving, setting up, and working from ladders and scaffolds.
Light to moderate physical effort is required in operating, turning, backing, and controlling vehicles which carry heavier loads due to the number of passengers. Moderate physical effort may be required in the handling of objects weighing up to 20 pounds and occasional handling of objects weighing up to 50 pounds

Work Conditions:
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all climate conditions. Work may require exposure to gas, smoke, dust, solvents. Incumbent is required to wear protective equipment when appropriate. Incumbent may be required to work extended hours, late evenings, holidays and weekends. Must agree to work overtime with proper notification.
Operates vehicles day or night in all types of traffic and weather conditions for all shifts. Operator is subject to cuts, bruises, and other injuries as a result of an accident while driving vehicles. If required, must agree to wear government provided uniform while operating vehicles.

Other Employment Conditions:
Must maintain a valid state drivers license and must maintain a good safety record while operating a Smithsonian vehicle.
Works a shift of 9:00AM to 5:30PM. Must be available weekends and have flexibility to work overtime as needed.
Serves as an essential employee during emergency weather conditions (or other unforeseen situations).


How you will be evaluated:

Applications will first be evaluated to determine whether the following screen out element is met:

  1. Ability To Do The Work Of a Facilities Services Worker Without More Than Normal Supervision.
    If an applicant meets the screen-out element, the following Job Elements will be evaluated:

    1. Skill in the operation of Motor Vehicles.
    2. Knowledge of work practices (includes maintaining facilities in a neat, clean and orderly manner).
    3. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc.
    4. Ability to Drive Safety (Motor vehicle).
    5. Ability to operate safely non-motor vehicles.
    6. Reliability and dependability as a Facilities Services Worker
