JOB SUMMARY:

The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.

The IHS is required by law to give absolute preference to qualified applicants who meet the Secretary of the Interior's definition of Indian for appointment to vacancies within the IHS in accordance with established IHS policy as outlined in the Indian Health Manual Part 7, Chapter 3. The Sells Service Unit consists of the Sells Hospital and three satellite health centers; San Xavier Health Center in Tucson, San Simon Health Center in San Simon Village and the Santa Rosa Health Center in Santa Rosa Village on the Tohono O'odham Nation Indian Reservation.  This position is located in the Public Health Nursing Department at the San Simon Health Center.  San Simon is located approximately 39 miles west of Sells, AZ and 105 miles southwest of Tucson, AZ.  Incumbent will assist the Communicable Disease Coordinator or other primary care providers in providing a variety of support duties associated with disease investigation, surveillance and sexually transmitted diseases (STD) case management.  Incumbent reports to the Director of Public Health Nursing.

  • Make home visits and explains Sexually Transmitted Diseases, complications, and treatments.

  • Investigate possible disease sources by interviewing patients and contacts, and reviews associated information in order to locate the source, carriers, and all spread cases related to the disease incident.

  • Make home visits independently to selected patients to elicit information, explain informed consent, deliver and explain referrals and appointments.

  • Maintain records and reporting systems in accordance with established service unit and IHS policies and procedures.

  • Deliver prescription medication, instructs patient in proper use of medication and discusses possible side effect, as directed by Communicable Disease Coordinator or other primary care provider.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):

GS-04:  6 months of general work experience and 6 months of specialized work experience –OR- successful completion of 2 years of education above high school that included 12 semester hours in subjects related to the position.

GS-05:  One (1) year of specialized work experience equivalent to at least GS-4 –OR- successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position.

General Experience: (l) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Specialized Experience:  Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.  Creditable specialized work experience includes:  setting up and maintaining a patient registry; making home visits independently to elicit information, explain informed consent, deliver and explain referrals and appointments to clients; instructing client in proper use of medications; obtaining specimens and performing venipuncture; and, assisting with inventory, purchase ordering, storage of supplies, and ordering durable medical equipment.

 

Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

WHAT TO EXPECT NEXT:
