GS 13:

  • Analyzes state of-the-art advances in theoretical mathematics (abstract algebra, finite fields, number theory, discrete mathematics, graph theoretic techniques, etc.)
  • Applies unique knowledge of mathematical structures and concepts along with knowledge of computational environments to transform mathematical formulations into algorithmic formulations amenable to computer implementation.
  • Maintains currency and liaison with external organizations and academia to ensure FBI capabilities in the methodological advances in pure and applied mathematics.
  • Formulates and develops official FBI policy and standards in areas requiring mathematical precision and specification.
GS-14:
  • Serves as OTD senior research analyst in the applied mathematical science field, with responsibility for the design, development and enhancement.
  • Analyzes state-0f-the-art advances in cryptic methodologies (e.g., factoring algorithms, group/field theory, discrete mathematics, advanced computer algorithms and architectures and etc.
  • Formulates and develops official FBI policy and standards in areas requiring mathematical underpinnings and formulates policy regarding interfaces between mathematical areas and crypto investigative support.
  • Serves as an advisor and authority to key management to provide decision input as the feasibility, utility and cost effectiveness of major technological advances.
  • Represents FBI officially and acts as official spokesman in such conferences, meetings, symposia, etc.

This position requires a Basic Education Requirement.

All applicants must meet the basic education requirement below.

A. Degree: mathematics; or the equivalent of a major that included at least 24 semester hours in mathematics.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in mathematics (including at least 24 semester hours in mathematics), as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

The total course work in either A or B above must have included differential and integral calculus and, in addition, four advanced mathematics courses requiring calculus or equivalent mathematics courses as a prerequisite.

The quality of the combination of education and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate that the applicant possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform work in the occupation, and is comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in the appropriate field. In addition to courses in the major and related fields, a typical college degree would have included courses that involved analysis, writing, critical thinking, research, etc. These courses would have provided an applicant with skills and abilities sufficient to perform progressively more responsible work in the occupation. Therefore, creditable experience should have demonstrated similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the work of the occupation.

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above requirements provided you can show that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.

GS 13: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS 12.

GS 14: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS 13.

Specialized experience:

  • Experience that utilizes analytic methods and transforms mathematical formulations into algorithmic formulations amenable to computer implementation.
  • Knoweldge of the lastest methodological advances in mathematics, cryptanalysis and computer science.
