NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED: This is an excepted position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the California National Guard. THIS IS A PERMANENT POSITION

This position is located in an Air National Guard Wing, Safety Office. The primary purpose of this position is to manage the ground safety program for the installation involving diverse group industrial safety and occupational activities and provide advisory safety services to tenant organizations. The incumbent advises command staff and operating officials on safety requirements, standards and procedures. The organizational goals or objectives of this position are to ensure the safety program is upheld by providing advisory safety service, guidance and direction to base personnel. The incumbent will work closely with the Chief of Safety.

GENERAL:  Experience in scientific or technical work that provided and understanding of the basic principles and concepts of the safety technical work that provided an understanding of the basic principles and concepts of the safety and occupational health field;  Creditable general experience must have demonstrated the achievement of knowledge equivalent to the education described above.

Undergraduate or with graduate education, have at least 24 semesters hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.

COPIES OF TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED FOR EDUCATION TO BE CREDITABLE

SAFETY and Occupational Health Specialist GS-0018-09: Must have 24 months specialized work experience in safety and occupational health management work which requires application of the knowledge of the principles standards and techniques of safety and occupational health management and pertinent elements of engineering, physical science, ergonomics, psychology, industrial hygiene, physiology, sociology, and other scientific and technological fields, that contribute to the achievement of comprehensive safety and occupational objectives.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: The following knowledge's, skills, and abilities will be used by the selecting officials to determine the best qualified applicants from which selection will be made: 

a. Knowledge of safety and occupational health laws, principles, standards, and inspection methods required to identify unsafe acts and working conditions.

b. Ability to transfer information understandably to individuals and/or groups informally and in classroom situations.

c. Knowledge of safety and occupational laws, and inspection and survey techniques sufficient to identify hazardous work practices and to recommend corrective measures.

d. Skill in analyzing mishap data to determine trends including type of mishaps and equipment involve, and frequency and severity of mishaps to government personnel and property.

e. Ability to prepare reports.

Undergraduate or with graduate education, have at least 24 semesters hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.
