DUTY LOCATION:  103d Operations Group, East Granby, CT

JOB SUMMARY:  The purpose of this position is to provide ground and airborne navigation instruction to assigned navigators, perform as an aircrew navigator during flying missions, and to function as a staff specialist responsible for the management, monitoring and implementation of a specific unit program required by Air Force, Major Command, and ANG regulations.

NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED.  This is an excepted position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the Connecticut Air National Guard. Applicants who are not currently a member of the Connecticut Air National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the Connecticut Air National Guard. The major duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide navigation expertise in training and certifying proficiency of unit assigned navigators in heavy, multi-engine aircraft in the following areas: selecting the most advantageous route, plotting the route of flight and preparing navigational charts and flight plans taking into account distance, method of navigation, altitudes, weather, and terrain. 
  • Trains and evaluates proficiency and competency of aircrew in weapons and tactics.
  • Designs and coordinates comprehensive training plans and scenarios to provide realistic technical aircrew training.
  • Plans, develops and implements the unit flying schedule using inputs from within the air operations division.

GENERAL EXPERIENCE:  Experience which provided a working knowledge of the navigation systems and navigational instruments of the assigned airframe.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:  Your resume and any other supporting documentation you wish to provide must clearly substantiate you currently possess 36 months of specialized experience in the following: 

  • Navigator certification with 1500 total hours or 1000 hours total navigation time which includes 200 hours time in the C-130.
  • Certified as a qualified Navigator Instructor with at least 50 hours since Navigator Instructor certification.
  • Completion of U.S. Air Force or U.S. Navy Specialized Undergraduate Navigator Training (SUNT) or Undergraduate Combat Systems Officer (CSO) Training.
  • Experience that has required you to obtain information on type of mission, weather and intelligence data, and special instructions.
  • Experience preparing navigation flight plans; experience that provided a knowledge of proper readings and operations of navigational systems.
  • Experience that shows your ability to test and inspect the operation of compasses, navigation systems, or radio and radar equipment.
  • Experience utilizing various navigational methods and aids to accomplish flying missions.
  • Experience computing the effect of various factors during flight to establish present course and project balance of course and ability to train, evaluate and certify proficiency and competency of lower graded personnel.

NOTE:  If you are Navigator Instructor certified, you must submit your certification.  Current aeronautical record/experience must be submitted with your application.  Failure to submit these documents will result in your disqualification.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:  No substitution of education will be acceptable for this position other than that are a prerequisite of the required specific certificates and instrument ratings for specific position.


  • Knowledge of the methods of air navigation such as dead reckoning, celestial and radio.
  • Knowledge of the aircraft systems and equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic aerodynamics and the forces and conditions that affect the mission.
  • Knowledge of the methods of instruction and navigational requirements of the mission.
  • Skill to apply knowledge in providing ground and flight training and in planning and performing the navigation portion of the mission.

COMPATIBLE MILITARY ASSIGNMENT: All applications will be considered regardless of AFSC. Incumbent will be required to be assigned to compatible military position within 1 year of selection. The selected individual may be required to attend formal technician school training.

  • MILITARY GRADE (Prior to appointment):  Officer:  O-2 through O-4
  • UNIT OF ASSIGNMENT:  103d Operations Group or any subordinate units.

  • Incentive Termination without Recoupment: If you accept an Active Guard Reserve (AGR) position or a Military Technician (Mil Tech) Permanent position where membership in the National Guard is a condition of employment, your bonus will be terminated with no recoupment as long as you have served at least 6 months of the bonus contract following receipt of the initial bonus payment.
