This is an indefinite position that may convert to permanent without further competition.

DUTY LOCATION:  Army Aviation Support Facility (AASF), Windsor Locks, CT

JOB SUMMARY:  This position is responsible for the performance of the full range of aircraft maintenance duties including troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, repair, and ground testing of assemblies, systems, and surfaces for one or more types of military aircraft, fixed and rotary wing.

NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED.  This is an excepted position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the Connecticut Army National Guard.  Applicants who are not currently a member of the Connecticut Army National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the Connecticut Army National Guard.  If you are not sure you are eligible for military membership, please contact a Connecticut Army National Guard recruiter at (800) 716-3550 before applying for this position.

The major duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Performs inspections, functional checks, and preventive maintenance on assigned aircraft to include phase inspection, daily inspections, pre- and post-flight inspections and such special inspections as required, including fuel contamination checks, oil sampling, and inspection of onboard emergency equipment.  
  • Conducts checks on hydraulic, electrical, transmission, power systems, etc.
  • Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and performs unscheduled maintenance on assigned and transient aircraft.
  • Performs the full range of repair and testing of aircraft systems, assemblies, and surfaces. 
  • Diagnoses and identifies problem areas and determines the extent of repairs required.
  • Conducts ground functional tests of all aircraft systems.

GENERAL EXPERIENCE:  Experience that has provided the candidate with the skill to remove and replace aircraft parts, accessories,components, and to make adjustments and settings according to established specifications and be skilled in the use of hand tools and test equipment.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:  Your resume and any other supporting documentation you wish to provide must clearly substantiate you currently possess 6, 12 or 18 months of specialized experience in the following:
WG-05 requires 6 months:

  • Use of common hand tools in making repetitive mechanical repairs under close supervision.
  • Experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the simpler and routine duties of the trade.

WG-08 requires 12 months:

  • Use of common hand tools to make mechanical repairs.
  • Experience removing and installing aircraft parts, components and accessories with detailed guidance.
  • Experience in following detailed instructions in making routine, reoccurring repairs and modifications to aircraft parts, subassemblies and components, e.g. such as jacking and leveling aircraft, installing and adjusting engines, landing gear assemblies, instrument panels, and flight control systems.

WG-10 requires 18 months:

  • Experience installing, adjusting, aligning, troubleshooting and functionally testing the various major and minor mechanical and pneudraulic systems on an aircraft during overhaul or modification.
  • Experience coordinating the work of other mechanics, and scheduling maintenance to ensure completion of critical actions and optimum work flow.
  • The ability to instruct lower graded mechanics, military and other personnel in the disassembly and reassembly of crash damaged engines, transmissions, gear boxes, hydraulic components, and fuel controls sufficient for the exhibit to be returned to its shipping container.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:  Job related education/ training in aviation technology may be substituted on a day-for-day basis for not more than half of the required specialized experience.


  • Ability to do diversified work with tools and equipment, requiring extreme caution in maintaining close dimensions.
  • Knowledge of aircraft components and maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to diagnose trouble and determine remedy where overall knowledge of all systems of aircraft is required.
  • Ability to inspect aircraft, determine mechanical deficiencies and analyze results.
  • Ability to interpret instructional material, schematics and specifications for complex mechanical problems on assigned aircraft. 

COMPATIBLE MILITARY ASSIGNMENT: All applicants will be considered regardless of Branch/AOC/FA/MOS.  Incumbent will be required to be assigned to compatible military position within 1 year of selection.  The selected individual may be required to attend formal technician school training.

  • MILITARY GRADE (Prior to application):  Enlisted:  E-6 and below
  • UNIT OF ASSIGNMENT:  1/169th AVN Regiment or any subordinate unit
  • SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: This position is covered by the medical monitoring program. Individual selected must undergo a pre-employment physical examination prior to appointment.

    STATEMENT OF DIFFERENCE: Individual selected at lower level will be issued a Statement of Difference. Predicated upon qualifications, individual could be hired at the WG-10 grade. An individual selected for this position at the lower grade will progressively be advanced to WG-10 upon achievement of required qualifications without further competition.
