  • Responds to incidents involving hazardous materials (HAZMATs) and weapons of mass destruction (WMD).
  • Assists and provides input for assigned incidents and training exercises. Provides input regarding the HAZMAT/WMD, its potential threat. Assists in providing for the safety of law enforcement personnel and the security of critical forensic evidence.
  • Implements operational strategies and contingency plans for site management and during assigned HAZMAT training exercises.
  • Provides liaison with local emergency responders and coordinates the provision of outside resources, as needed. As required, supervises the establishment of hot and warm zone perimeters. Implements and supervises safety procedures, including monitoring for hazardous conditions, the use of appropriate protective gear, procedures for entering and exiting the hot zone, and contamination procedures.
  • Coordinates with medical personnel to assure safety of personnel on-site. Provides Advanced Life Support care to response personnel in WMD crime scenes and austere environments.
  • Provides recommendations to assist in the development of standard operating procedures. Serves as a course manager,facilitator or training instructor for assigned courses, exercises, conferences or conferences or workshops.

    All applicants must possess one (1) year of Specialized Experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS 11, GS 12) respectively:

  • Specialized experience is experience in responding to incidents and/or operations involving HAZMAT, providing assistance and input to management regarding policies and regulations involving HAZMAT incidents/operations, operational readiness and crisis management; experience in forming liaison with professional groups/persons in HAZMAT emergency response/operational field.

The selectee may be required to serve a one-year probationary period. This position requires the selectee to pass a hazmat physical, as well as biannual hazmat physicals, and obtain a Top Secret-SCI clearance. This position may occasionally require time spent working in situations which expose incumbent to a potentially hazardous environment. Work requires strenuous physical exertion, the candidate must be able to lift up to 50lbs of equipment, bend, crawl, work in confined spaces and spend up to 8-12 hours on their feet when deployed.




The selected candidate will be required to remain on an alert status for possible immediate deployment to WMD incidents within the United States and its territories. While on an alert status the candidate will have limited ability to travel, maintaining a stringent 24/7 re-call requirement for up to six months of the year. The selected candidate must also be willing to work weekends and other shifts as necessary.

Policy has been implemented wherein support employees entering a position through a competitive OR non-competitive action may be precluded from moving to another position within the Bureau by means of reassignment or change to a lower grade for a minimum of 12 months. This policy does not apply to probationary employees.
