This position is located in the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), Division of Mining Science and Technology (DMST), Health Communications, Surveillance and Research Support Branch (HCSRB) in Bruceton, PA.

As a supervisory health scientist you will:

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership to the Health Communications, Surveillance and Research Support Branch (HCSRSB) which focuses in the areas of surveillance, statistics, health communications and computer programming.
  • Supervise a staff of scientific,professional, administrative and other support personnel in the HCSRSB.
  • Direct and evaluate activities which are likely to be the most productive in terms of the state-of-the-art, available resources, and organizational priorities and objectives.
  • Formulate, develop, and direct broad program and strategic plans for activities that will lead to advances for the organization. 
  • Plan, organize, and oversee the activities of the HCSRSB to include budget issues, overall administration, attending meetings, etc. 
  • Provide leadership and direction in human capital direction and strategy, workforce planning, recruitment and retention,and workforce diversity as it relates to activities of the Branch.
  • Serve as an expert for the agency with responsibility for developing policy and objectives, appraising programs and developing program strategies to develop new insights into: 1) causes and mechanisms of injuries and illnesses of mine workers; 2) health communications products and approaches; and 3) providing computer programming support to research products.  
  • Plan and review projects of the Division of Mining Research Operations to identify strategies to support and enable this research.   
  • Represent the organization at meetings with representatives of other Federal, state and local agencies labor groups;private industry; foreign governments; professional societies; academia; and other institutions to foster mission-relevant responsive research.   
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications for GS-0601-14: Have successfully completed at a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree or higher degree that included a major field of study in an academic field related to the health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position.

Additional Qualification requirements:

Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.

 

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include formulating, developing and/or directing programs and strategic plans for the activities of a large organization.

You must provide acceptable documentation that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
