The Critical Care Medicine Department (CCMD), Clinical Center is seeking a Biologist (Molecular) with extensive experience in performing a wide variety of complex experimental procedures involving cell biology, biochemistry, immunology, and molecular biology techniques.  The position is located within the Research Laboratories of the CCMD and is involved in conducting high quality basic research as it relates to understanding vascular inflammation. As a Biologist (Molecular) in the Critical Care Medicine Department, Clinical Center, your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Conduct functional genomics research, studying different expression profiles, gene regulation, signal transduction, novel DNA-protein interactions, and promoter structure to better understand the biology of critical illness;
  • Conduct research using plasmid purification, DNA/RNA purification and quantitation, production of recombinant vectors, subcloning, cell transfection, siRNA knockdown, real-time PCR, site-directed mutageneisis, electromobility shift assay (EMSA), and ChIP;
  • Analyze experimental data and discuss the interpretation, reliability, validity, and significance of ongoing research projects;
  • Use a wide variety of bioinformatic approaches, statistical methods, and computer programs to collect, organize, and analyze data for optimal retrieval and presentation of results in a clear and concise manner;
  • Troubleshoot problems with equipment and experimental techniques and develop methods to resolve these difficulties; and
  • Perform and direct section projects focused on vascular biology to ensure that appropriate experiments are conducted efficiently and smoothly.

Basic Qualification Requirements:
You must have completed the requirements for a bachelor’s (or graduate) degree in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position, from an accredited college or university.
OR
You must have a combination of experience and education which includes courses comparable to a major in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to this position, AND appropriate experience or additional education which demonstrates similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the duties of this position.

Additional Requirements:

In addition to meeting the basic qualification requirements indicated above, you must meet the additional experience and/or education requirement as described below:

Grade 11:
You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: assisting in developing, planning, and implementing molecular biomedical research; collecting, studying, developing, assembling, and analyzing molecular biomedical research data; assisting in developing and preparing comprehensive molecular biomedical reports, analytical interpretations, conclusions, or recommendations, typically for publication; using a variety of laboratory instruments to perform molecular analyses; and developing modifications to protocols and procedures used in conducting molecular biomedical studies.
OR
Have completed three (3) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a related field.
OR
Have a combination of related post baccalaureate education and specialized experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.

 
Grade 12:
You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: independently developing, planning, and implementing molecular biomedical research; collecting, studying, developing, assembling, and analyzing molecular biomedical research data; developing and preparing comprehensive molecular biomedical reports, analytical interpretations, conclusions, or recommendations, typically for publication; calibrating and using a variety of laboratory instruments to perform molecular analyses; developing new protocols and procedures used in conducting molecular biomedical studies.
