Location:  This position is located in Brownsville, Texas.

About the Office:  The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas, with approximately 190 Assistant United States Attorneys, is among the largest in the country.  The office prosecutes federal crimes and represents the interests of the United States in civil cases.  The Southern District of Texas stretches from the Houston area southwest to the Mexican border.  The United States Attorney’s Office operates staffed offices in Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Houston, Laredo, McAllen, and Victoria.

Responsibilities and Opportunity Offered: The United States Attorney=s Office seeks one or more experienced criminal prosecutors to serve as Assistant United States Attorneys in its Brownsville office.  The incumbents will investigate and prosecute violations of federal laws, specifically crimes involving immigration, drug, and firearms offenses. 

 

The Brownsville Division is among the busiest offices in the United States: in 2013 alone, the Brownsville office indicted nearly 900 felony cases.  A total of 17 attorneys work in the office, 11 of whom prosecute the bulk of the division=s criminal cases.  The successful applicant will thus have ample and immediate opportunity to try criminal cases.

Required Qualifications:  Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least one year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.

  

United States citizenship is required.

 

Preferred Qualifications:  Hiring preferences include significant first-chair criminal litigation experience, strong academics, outstanding organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills, superior legal writing and research ability, and a demonstrated commitment to professionalism, ethics, civility, and public service.  Spanish language skills and familiarity with South Texas are highly desirable, but not required.

Type of Position: This is a full-time, permanent position.  All initial attorney appointments to the Department of Justice are made on a 14-month (temporary) basis pending favorable adjudication of a background investigation.  A selectee who is currently employed with the U.S. Attorney’s Office will be considered and the employment status will be reviewed based on his/her current appointment.

 

Security Requirements:  Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication.  This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing.  In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

 

Residency Requirements:  Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof.  See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

Veterans' Preference: There is no formal rating system for applying veterans' preference to attorney appointments in the excepted service; however, the Department of Justice considers veterans' preference eligibility as a positive factor in attorney hiring. Applicants eligible for veterans' preference must indicate their preference in response to the appropriate question in their assessment questionnaire (it is also recommended that information is included in their cover letter or resume) and they must submit supporting documentation (e.g., DD 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty and other supporting documentation) which verifies their eligibility for preference. Salary Information:  Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience.  The range of basic pay for 2014 is $45,027 to $132,849 per annum, plus locality pay where authorized.
