Seeking a full-time Custodial Worker for the Facilities Engineering Unit in Ames, Iowa.

This position requires the selectee to undergo a pre-employment check and a full background investigation. Any offer made is considered a tentative job offer pending the outcome of the pre-employment check. Retention in the position is based upon a favorable adjudication of the applicant and incumbent testing. The incumbent will be subject to periodic reinvestigations.

This position is being concurrently announced under Merit Promotion procedures on ARS-M14E-0049.  Disabled Veterans, candidates with 3 or more years of active duty military service, and candidates eligible for special hiring authorities can apply to the Merit Promotion announcement if they meet criteria for the above and include supporting documents.

Major duties may include, but are not limited to:

* Cleaning offices, restrooms, corridors, stairways, entryways, cafeteria, and other areas.
* Operating heavy (industrial-type) power operated cleaning equipment. 
* Sweeping, dry mopping, wet mopping, scrubbing, stripping, waxing and polishing floors using brooms, vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbers and buffers; vacuuming and spot cleaning carpets; removing stains from a variety of surfaces such as rugs, drapes, walls, floors, and fixtures using chemicals and cleaning solutions.
* Adjusting, cleaning, oiling, changing brushes, rollers, buffers, and other attachments on cleaning machines.
* Dusting, waxing, and polishing furniture; polishing door knobs and other metal surfaces.
* Cleaning walls, ceilings, room partitions, and polishing fixtures that can be reached only by a ladder; washing and replacing window blinds.
* Moving furniture, boxes, cabinets, crates, and equipment to clean areas.
* Cleaning and setting up chair arrangements in conference rooms and auditorium.
* Emptying waste baskets.
* Keeping rest rooms clean, orderly, and in sanitary condition; cleaning, disinfecting and deodorizing lavatories, urinals and toilet bowls, cleaning mirrors, sinks and water fountains and dusting ledges and wood work; replacing deodorizers, toilet tissue, hand towels, and soap.  Noting condition of restrooms and reporting to supervisor water leaks, clogged drains, and other conditions requiring maintenance. 
* Keeping stock of cleaning materials and equipment needed to do the work and ordering from warehouse when additional supplies are needed.
* Running hand or powered motors and trimmers; performing snow removal at entry doors, smoking shelter, and other areas as needed.
* Performing other duties as assigned.

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on the closing date of the vacancy announcement.

Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. You must have the ability to perform the duties of a Custodial Worker, WG-3566-02 , without more than normal supervision (Screen-out). Applicants who do not meet the Screen-out element will not be given further consideration.

Physical Effort: The incumbent must be able to operate and control floor maintenance machines, move and control heavy equipment and carry, set up and work from ladders. Frequently lift and move objects weighing 40 pounds and occasionally over 50 pounds. Occasionally assigned to operate push type lawn mowers, shovel snow off of walks, and operate grass trimmer. Will be required to work with a large variety of cleaning agents. This job will require bending and lifting and moderate to heavy physical effort when mopping or moving furniture.

Working Conditions: The work is usually performed in offices, common public areas, warehouses, or outdoor facilities. The work involves exposure to strong cleaning solutions, disagreeable odors, and exposure to hot and cold conditions, high noise and vibration levels, an occasionally to harmful biological, chemical, and physical agents. Protective devices such as gloves, goggles, face mask, or respirators and immunizations may be required. The health status of personnel may be monitored periodically using biologic and serologic tests and physical examinations if required.


The category rating procedure is used to rank and select eligible candidates. Under category rating, applicants who meet basic minimum qualification requirements and job elements established for the position are assessed and ranked by being placed in one of the following categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, and Qualified. Preference eligibles are listed ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category.

You will be evaluated based on your qualifications for this position as evidenced by the education, experience, and training you described in your application package, as well as the responses to the Occupational Questionnaire as they relate to the job elements listed below:

  • Ability to do the work of a custodial worker without more than normal supervision. (This is the screen-out element.  Applicants who are not rated satisfactory on the screen-out element will not be rated on the remaining elements.)
  • Ability to handle weights and loads.
  • Work practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order).
  • Ability to follow oral or equivalent and written directions.
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Dexterity and safety.
