The Nurse Practitioner (NP) will divide his/her attention between their dual roles in managing patients within the GI and ID sections in the department of medicine. Administrative supervision will be provided through the nursing care line while clinical supervision will be provided through the medical care line lead attending physician staff of the GI and ID sections. The position is generally conceived to be a 0.6/0.4 FTE commitment to the GI and ID sections respectively.

 

The NP will provide comprehensive GI specialty care (including HCV care and management of co-infected (HCV/HIV patients) in the ambulatory and, as needed, in the in-patient setting. S/he will facilitate electronic and telephone triaging of referred patients to the most appropriate venue based on the patient's needs, acuity and facility resources. S/he will complete electronic telehealth and in-patient consultation when appropriate and be available to see walk-in patients if needed. S/he will assist with the colo-rectal cancer screening program, liver transplant and hepatology programs. S/he will assist in endoscopy as needed. S/he will provide primary and ID specialty care for veterans with HIV in all stages of the disease from diagnosis until end stage AIDS. The NP will be the clinical coordinator for the HIV clinic

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:   

  • Citizen of the United States
  • Graduate of an NLN accredited or State approved School of Nursing
  • Recent/Current RN Registration
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider required.

 

EDUCATIONAL / EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • MSN degree required
  • Nurse Practitioner Certification in Adult, Family or Acute Care by the American Nurses Credentialing Center: http://www.nursecredentialing.org/cert/eligibility/adm.html or AANP
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider required.
  • Experience with HIV medicine and/or GI preferred.
  •  Clinical experience as a nurse practitioner in the field of adult, family practice, or acute care preferred.
  • Strong clinical and care coordination/outcomes management of specialty population preferred.

 

 

     

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel.

The criteria are as follows:
