These positions are located within Geriatrics & Extended Care at the VA Medical Center, Bath, New York. ONLY Certified Nursing Assistants will be qualified - copy of certification MUST accompany application materials.

The incumbent's primary function is to provide comfort, care, and safety for Community Living Center residents while escorting them for medical appointments, specialty consultation visits, or off-station trips for care. The work of a GS-04 Certified Nursing Assistant within Geriatrics & extended Care includes, but is not limited to:

  • provide a range of patient/resident care and contribute to the completion of the nurse care plan and recovery of patients/residents
  • observe patient/resident physical and/or emotional status and refer deviations and/or problems of concern to the Supervisor in a timely manner
  • properly use equipment, materials, and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures such as  continuous passive motion device, blood glucose monitoring machine, specimen collection, etc.
  • communicate effectively with patients/residents, their families, and other health professionals

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:   

  • U.S. citizenship.   
  • English Language Proficiency.  In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.  
  • Certification as Certified Nursing Assistant (any state)

 

One year of specialized experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or experience in a related field, i.e., LPN, Health Technician, Hospital corpsman, etc. performing technical or nursing skills requiring knowledge of the human physical and emotional states, therapeutic communications, and technical skills required for basic and intermediate treatments OR successful completion of a two year (above high school) in an accredited institution with courses related to direct nursing care, health care, or in field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as education in a program for psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technician OR a combination of education and experience.  PLEASE NOTE:  When using education (in whole or in part) we must receive transcripts; education cannot be credited without proper documentation.

 

Preferred Experience: Work in a position as a Certified Nursing Assistant with at least a year of specialized experience in a healthcare setting, i.e., skilled nursing facility, hospital, or medical center.

Physical Requirements:  extensive periods of standing and walking; working with patients making it necessary to regularly bend, lift, and stoop, strecth and similar activities. May be scheduled to work varying hours of duty, and may, on occasion, be detailed to other patient care areas. Work Environment: Work is performed in a medical care environment requiring normal safety and infection control precautions. May be assigned to off station trips.
