 The Medical Support Assistant is responsible for initiating and performing a variety of support functions as administrative and clerical duties associated with patient care and treatment on an inpatient and outpatient (Medical, Surgical, Psychiatric, Operating Room, Blind Rehabilitation, Spinal Cord Injury, & Disorders (SCI&D), and Comprehensive Integrated Inpatient Rehabilitation Program (CIIRP), Cardio Lab and Community Living Center) units of this facility

This position is in the Excepted Service. Initial appointment to this position is subject to the recommendation of a professional standards board and approval by the Medical center Director. Grade and salary will be recommended by the board and is based on the personal qualification of the candidate (i.e education, certification, experience, etc.)



This is the full performance level for a Medical Support Assistant (MSA). At this level. The MSA performs a full range of duties.  The MSA is responsible for: Scheduling, canceling, re-scheduling patient’s appointments and/or consults. Interpreting and verifying provider orders in accordance with VHA national scheduling guidelines. Entering no-shows information. Monitoring the electronic wait visit. Preparing for clinics visits. Monitoring both inpatient and outpatient appointments for areas of responsibility. Ensuring encounter forms are completed in order to obtain appropriate workload credits. Verifying and updating demographic and insurance information. Processing all emergency and non-emergency transfer to other VA facilities or private hospitals.  Performing basic eligibility, co-pays and pre-authorization requirements for specific coverage. Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday to Saturday from  5:30am  to 2:00pm, 6:00am to 2:30pm, 7:00am to 3:30pm, 7:30am to

4:00pm, and 8:00am to 4:30pm.
