Area Information:

Morristown National Historical Park is comprised of approximately 1700 acres in Morris and Somerset counties in north central New Jersey, about 30 miles west of New York City. Morristown was the quarters of the Continental Army during the winters of 1777 and 1778-1779. The park includes the Ford Mansion, Washington Headquarters, and Fort Nonsense in Morristown; Jockey Hollow, the largest unit, five miles south of Morristown; and the New Jersey Brigade area about 10 miles south of Morristown. Annual visitation is about 350,000. Train and bus service to New York City is available in Morristown. This position is located in the Maintenance Division, Morristown National Historical Park, Morristown, New Jersey.  The incumbent is under the supervision of the Maintenance Mechanic Foreman, WS-4709-09.  Work is performed in all units of the site. 

The incumbent in this position will:

  • Perform work in a variety of trades performing such duties as replacing switches/outlets, changing washers, replacing molding and putting up drywall
  • Drive vehicles including pick-up trucks and vans to various sites within the park
  • Perform road and grounds maintenance
  • Operate power equipment such as snow and leaf blowers, tillers, walk-behind mowers and tillers. 
  • Perform general park clean up and janitorial duties
  • Unload delivery trucks

To qualify for this position, the applicant under normal supervision must:

 

Have the ability to assist higher graded trades workers with a full range of maintenance activities inside buildings and outside on building grounds, walkways and roads; have the ability to use common hand tools (e.g. hammers, saws, screwdrivers, etc.) and measuring devices (e.g. tape measures, scales, etc.) to help higher-graded workers build or repair simple structures like boardwalks, kiosks, etc.; can assist in plumbing repairs such as fixing leaky faucets and drains and replacing and repacking plumbing housing for worn fixtures; assist higher level workers to replace faulty light fixtures and switches, tighten and reconnect loose wiring, and fix poorly operating thermostats; skilled in the use and operation of paint brushes, rollers, and sprayers to paint building interiors and exteriors, and also able to make minor repairs to equipment such as chainsaws, small engines and other roads and grounds equipment.

OR
have the ability to perform the full range of custodial and maintenance activities inside buildings and outside on building grounds, walkways and roads; have the ability to use hand and power tools to build or repair simple structures like boardwalks, kiosks, etc. with some supervision; skilled in the use and operation of paint brushes, rollers, and sprayers to paint building interiors and exteriors;  have the ability to make simple plumbing repairs such as fixing leaky faucets and drains and replacing and repacking plumbing housing for worn fixtures; can replace faulty light fixtures and switches, tighten and reconnect loose wiring, and fix poorly operating thermostat, and also able to make minor repairs to equipment such as chainsaws, small engines and other roads and grounds equipment

OR
have the ability to perform the full range of custodial and maintenance activities inside buildings and outside on building grounds, walkways and roads; have the ability to use hand and power tools to independently build or repair simple structures like boardwalks, kiosks, etc by interpreting drawings or instructions; skilled in selecting and mixing paints or varnishes for building interiors and exteriors; have the ability to make plumbing repairs that can be accomplished by removing, cleaning, replacing, packing, and sealing defective parts of utility, and disposal systems such as dirty traps, sections of broken tile pipe, and leaky drains; able to operate and repair (e.g. replace defective parts, make adjustments, etc.) various vehicles, including trucks, tractors, and mowers; have the ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams, locate and remove broken and bare wiring, splice and solder defective wiring, replace burned out switches through a visual check or use of a small variety of test equipment, and also able to make minor repairs to equipment such as chainsaws, small engines and other roads and grounds equipment.

AND

have the ability to lift, push, pull, carry and handle objects weighing up to 80 pounds.
