JOB SUMMARY:

Civilian employees serve a vital role in supporting the Army mission. They provide the skills that are not readily available in the military, but crucial to support military operations. The Army integrates the talents and skills of its military and civilian members to form a Total Army.

About the Position:

"This position is located at Irwin Army Community Hospital (IACH), Fort Riley, KS. Fort Riley is nestled in the Flint Hills of Kansas, between the communities of Manhattan (Home of Kansas State University) and Junction City.  In 2009 the Department of Defense approved the construction for a new, $404 million facility. This new hospital is scheduled to be completed in 2014 and will be 550,000 square feet with 47-beds.  It will provide state-of-the-art patient rooms, more clinic space, and a better atmosphere for patient care. Additionally, it will include a new 8 bed in-patient psychiatric unit, a new feature for IACH."

Major Duties: At the GS-06 level you will perform developmental assignment under closer than normal Supervision. Assignment become progressively more difficult until the full-performance level is reached. Non-competitive promotion to the target job may be effected provided the incumbent is sufficiently experience; meets all necessary qualification requirement for functioning under the supervisory controls stated in the target job description.

 

At the full-performance GS-07 level, performs qualitative analysis to ensure the accuracy, internal consistency of data, inclusion and completeness of pertinent reports and data, and arrangement of record contents is in accordance with prescribed regulations. Ensures inclusion and completeness of dictated & handwritten medical reports & other medical documentation such as physician's orders, progress notes, operative reports, and nursing documentation. Analyzes medical data to determine if terminology used is consistent with acceptable nomenclature and all complications are listed appropriately. Serves as Subject Matter Expert for department chiefs, health care providers, and coding staff to obtain information or clarification on accurate and ethical documentation standards, guidelines, and regulatory requirements.

To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. To qualify, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade/level (GS-05 or GS-06). For the GS-06 level, specialized experience is defined as use of medical terminology to perform medical records coding and assigning ICD-9 codes.

 

For the GS-07 level, specialized experience is defined as use of medical terminology to perform medical records, implementation of quality assurance procedures and regulations, complex processing of assigning ICD-9 Codes, auditing, and coding of complicated medical records that are identified as difficult to classify.

 

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

· Skill in Performing Coding Audits

· Knowledge of Medical Coding Procedures

· Ability to Analyze Medical Data

· Ability to Communicate in Writing


Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.  For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Conditions of employment

A qualified typist is required (minimum 40 words per minute).

A certified coder is required, IAW AR-40-66, Section III. Medical Treatment Facilities will hire only credentialed coding staff (that is credentialed through AHIMA or AAPC with one of the following credentials:

RHIA - Registered Health Information Administrator

RHIT - Registered Health Information Technician

CCS - Certified Coding Specialist

CCA - Certified Coding Associate

CCS-P - Certified Coding Specialist - Professional

CPC - Certified Professional Coder

CPC-A - Certified Professional Coder Apprentice

CPC-H - Certified Professional Coders- Hospital
