This position is being filled in the excepted service under the Pathway's Internship Program.  The Pathway's Internship Program is designed to provide students with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school. To learn more about the Pathway's Internship program please visit  Interns appointed from this vacancy will be placed in position expected to last no more than one year.  The appointment may be extended until the selectee's educational program requirements have been completed.  


This announcement will be used to fill full-time in the summer and part-time (32 hours) after school starts for a internship position.  However, work schedule may be changed/reduced depending on workload or funding.


This is a temporary position with a full-time and/part time work schedule not to exceed 1 year.

Major Duties:  The incumbent of this position will, following instructions and standardized procedures, implement natural resources management projects.  Work will involve collection and organization of field data; routine and recurring testing of collected samples; recording of data; making field observation of natural resource conditions; and assisting in preparation of reports, plans and guidelines.  Logistical support will be provided for contract or cooperating scientists, and training will be provided to volunteers, cooperatiors, and or others.  Installs, operates and maintains resource management equipment such as traps and laboratory equipment, and uses a variety of computer programs in completion of assigned tasks.


The incumbent will report directly to the Chief of Resource Managment.

Applicants must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a student at least a half-time schedule at a qualifying educational institution in a certificate, degree, or diploma program.


GS-05: Possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level in the Federal service. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting environmental monitoring and management activities, such as air quality monitoring measurements for ozone, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, particulate matter, radon, carbon dioxide, meteorology for impacts on natural resources. For example, I conducted field surveys to document and assess environmental or natural resource conditions; air quality impact assessments; conducted ecological/resource assessments or inventories or management activities; or other similar natural resource management and assessment activities using established protocols and standard scientific equipment. In carrying out this work I followed established protocols and recorded resource data using computer software such as Microsoft Access, Excel, Word, ArcGIS, Pathfinder Office, or comparable programs.



Have the one year of specialized experience as defined in A above; however, I have successfully completed four years of education above high school (120 semester hour or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree and one period of Intern trainee work experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level with major study or 24 semester hours of course work in a related field of scientific or technical study, such as in geography, geology, meteorology, biology, chemistry, statistics, physics, mathematics, or other related subject matter. (At least 6 semester hours must have been in subjects that were directly-related to the work of this position, such as in meteorology, geography, chemistry or other natural resource topics).



Have one full year of specialized experience as described in 1A above or the 4 years of education as indicated in 1B above, but I have completion of two and a half academic years of study leading to a bachelor’s degree and 6 months (at least 960 hours) of Intern work experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 related coursework as specified in 1B above.

·        You must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a degree or certificate program on at least a half-time basis and remain in good standing.

·        Enrollment must be with an accredited educational institution or state approved home-school.  These may include high schools, colleges, universities, technical; trade, vocational, or business schools, and state approved home school secondary and post-secondary programs.

·        Qualifying certificate programs are post-high school programs equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocationl, or business school curriculum.
