VA New Jersey Health Care System (VANJHCS) seeks a Primary Care Physician for its East Orange, NJ campus in the Center for Health and Wellness (CHW) under the Ambulatory Care Service.  The incumbent will be designated as a Primary Care Physician under the Associate Chief of Staff, Ambulatory Care Service under the direction of VANJHCS.

The Center for Health and Wellness in East Orange is the cornerstone of VA New Jersey Health Care System’s work as one of five designated national VA Centers of Innovation.  As a Center of Innovation, VANJHCS is charged to innovate around delivery of Personalized, Proactive, Patient-Driven healthcare.  The CHW is designed to transform the practice of primary care medicine through delivery of comprehensive, whole-person care within a Patient-Aligned Care Team, in a setting with co-located integrative medicine services.  It is desirable that the incumbent have expertise in whole-person primary care medicine including disease diagnosis, illness experience, preventive medicine, team-based care, women's health, and familiarity with Complementary & Alternative modalities of care.  The CHW multidisciplinary primary care practice includes physicians, nurses, health psychologists, social workers, health coaches, a clinical pharmacist, nutritionist, and evaluation staff.  Guiding Principles of the CHW include customer service excellence,  patient activation and empowerment, personalized health planning, shared decision-making, performance improvement, and embracing technology.

Residency training in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine is preferred, and additional training and/or experience, and/or interest in Integrative or Functional Medicine desirable.  The incumbent reports to the immediate designated clinical supervisor, the ACOS for Ambulatory Care, and collaborates with the Administrative Officer (AO), Chief of Primary Care, CHW Nurse Manager, and others assigned as administrative and clinical supervisors.  This includes a collaborative relationship with a Nurse Practitioner and collaborative relationships with Integrative Care practitioners.

WORK SCHEDULE: Full Time, Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: See VA Handbook 5005, Part III, Chapter 2, paragraph 7, and VA Handbook 5019, Occupational Health Services.  Work is mostly sedentary in nature.  Work requires moderate lifting, walking, bending, stooping, standing, pushing, and pulling.

In order to qualify for this position, you must meet the following:

Basic Requirements:

  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English
  • U.S. citizenship.  Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.

Preferred Experience:

  • Board certification in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine is preferred.
  • Experience and/or residency training in Integrative or Functional Medicine is preferred.
