The Department of Defense Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) is currently accepting applications under examining authority of 10 U.S.C., Section 2164, for the above position(s) in DDESS Schools. This vacancy announcement will be used for the purpose of filling this permanent, full-time position.  


Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) is a DoD Field Activity responsible for the oversight of two school systems, the Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS) and the Department of Defense Domestic Dependent Elementary & Secondary Schools (DDESS).   DoDEA employs more than 15,000 individuals responsible for educating approximately 90,000 students in 12 foreign countries, seven states, Guam, and Puerto Rico.   The mission of DoDEA is to provide a quality education from pre-kindergarten through grade twelve for the eligible minor family members of DoD military and civilian personnel on official assignments.

This position is the first full-time supervisory level for a group of non-supervisory employees in the same or related trades or occupations. This position is responsible for planning, assigning and directing work, and for training subordinates, enforcing disciplinary, security, and safety regulations and good housekeeping practices, performing administrative functions for subordinates and other related duties. The employee also performs a variety of mechanic work to include air conditioning, refrigeration, kitchen/bakery equipment, electrical, pipe fitting, plumbing and carpentry. The work requires a Heating Ventilation and Air Condition (HVAC) certification with extensive knowledge of principles of air conditioning and refrigeration and the skill to install, maintain, recognize the cause of faulty equipment and repair commercial and industrial systems that provide for a variety of refrigeration and air conditioning functions. The work also requires an extensive working knowledge of the mechanics and operation, including the skills to install, maintain and repair of all kitchen/bakery equipment, all facilities electrical systems, all facilities plumbing operations, refrigeration systems and ground maintenance operations and requirements.

The employee serves as supervisor over the Maintenance Department of the Fort Benning School System, responsible for the upkeep and repair of the following: 7 school buildings with auditoriums and kitchen facilities totaling 362,748 square feet of building space and 159 acres of grounds, 1 central administration and supply complex totaling 32,150 square feet of building space and 30 acres of grounds; 1 maintenance facility totaling 3,200 square feet of building space and 5 acres of grounds; approximately 11 portable buildings used as classrooms or office space,

The incumbent will work indoors and outdoors, on elevated structures, and in cramped areas.  Subject to discomfort from face masks and/or other protective devices when there is a possibility of exposure to toxic refrigerants, noxious gases, fumes or acids.  Employee is exposed to dangers of moving equipment, energized electric circuits, sharp metal edges, and toxic fumes while performing the duties of this position.  Exposure to electrical conductors ailments.  Typical safety equipment required on the job is safety shoes, safety glasses, and hard hats.

You must show you have extensive knowledge of air conditioning and refrigeration units and extensive working knowledge of the mechanics and operation, including the skills to install, maintain and repair all kitchen/bakery equipment.  Additional experience in supervising workers in the same or related trades or occupations such as air conditioning, refrigeration, kitchen/bakery equipment, electrical, pipe fitting, plumbing, and carpentry is required. 

 This work requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate tools when assembling units and replacing defective components, coordination for reading and setting gauges, checking refrigerant leaks, and adjusting controls, and color discrimination to recognize color codes.  Work frequently requires stooping, stretching, bending and kneeling for long periods of time.

 The heaviest weight handled by the employee unassisted will normally be 50 pounds, and with assistance 100 pounds or more.


Certification Requirements:

Heating, Ventilation and Air Condition (HVAC) certification is required.
