- U.S. citizenship.
- A high school diploma or equivalent OR at least 3 months experience
- Must be proficient in spoken and written English
- Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is highly desirable
In addition to the basic requirements noted above, candidates must meet the grade requirements as noted below.
For GS-4: Successful completion of 2 years above high school with courses related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology; OR 1 year of general experience that may have included experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, laboratory technology, etc.). Successful completion of a course for medical technicians, hospital corpsmen, medical service specialists, or hospital training obtained in a training program conducted by the Armed Forces or the US maritime Service under close medical and professional supervision is creditable on a month-for-month basis for general experience. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
1. Ability to process and fill prescriptions under supervision.
2. Ability to operate and maintain dispensing equipment.
3. Ability to operate pharmacy information systems.
4. Ability to maintain appropriate files.
5. Ability to prepare sterile compounds under supervision.
For GS-5: Successful completion of a 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included at least 24 semester hours of courses related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology; OR successful completion of pertinent specialized training courses in pharmaceutical and pharmacy services while serving in the Armed Forces is creditable on a month-for-month basis up to the 1 year of experience required for the GS-5 level; OR at least 1 year of experience equivalent at the GS-4 grade level as described above. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Working knowledge of drug use and dosage forms available to be able to screen drug orders for propriety and assist the Clinical Pharmacist in solving potential problems.
2. Working knowledge of computer systems, as they apply to the dispensing of outpatient prescriptions and the records thereof.
3. Knowledge of the laws, regulations and official policy concerning drug procurement and security and dispensing, to conform to legal and professional requirements of pharmacy practice.
4. Ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment.
5. Knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique.
6. Knowledge of basic inventory procedures.
7. Technical knowledge of drug and medication brand names, generic names/chemical names, general and special storage requirements, expiration date requirements, manufacturer/distributor sources, dosage forms, applicable systems of weights and measures, and medical terminology.
NOTE: The GS-5 grade level represents the full performance level for a Pharmacy Technician. Employees at this grade level serve as staff pharmacy technicians receiving little guidance from more experience staff members for more complex patients and procedures, and require minimal supervision.
NOTE: Creditable Experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics associated with the scope of pharmacy technician practice as noted above. Part time experience as a pharmacy technician is credited according to its relationship to the full time work week.

Physical Requirements: Computer keyboard activity and computer monitor use is frequently performed. Hearing acuity is required for phone communication, patient counseling and professional communication. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations and able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Works closely with others.
