This position is located in the Blood Bank, Laboratory Medicine Services, Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) California.   Serve as a Medical Technologist in the Transfusion Service.   Oversee the technical procedures and manage daily operations in the Transfusion Service.   The position involves monitoring results reported, performing specialized studies and difficult procedures, modifying or adapting new methods or techniques to improve or expand services and solving complex diagnostic and technical problems.   The Blood Bank provides support to outlying clinics such as Naval Air Base Coronado, Naval Training Center clinic, Miramar Marine Air Base clinic, Marine Corps Recruiting Depot clinic, Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, Pacific Fleet Southwest Region and other hospitals within the Western Area Blood system.

 

NMCSD mission is to provide the finest medical care in a family-centered care environment to the operational forces, their families, and to those who served their country in the past.   NMSCD is located on Florida Drive, adjacent to Balboa Park.   Nicknamed, Balboa, "The Pride of Navy Medicine", we are a premier teaching hospital and referral center for the Armed Forces, and the most technologically advanced U.S. Navy medical treatment facility.  For more information about NMSCD, click here.

A typical day in the life as the Supervisory Medical Technologist!

  • Serve as technical supervisor assuming day to day responsibility for assuring the quality of all Blood Bank operations.
  • Act as a resource for technical information to the staff and overall operation of the department.
  • Oversee testing and reporting of results of routine specimens.
  • Assess problems and concerns regarding patients, component procedures, and computer problems and achieve resolution.
  • Keep abreast of, and implement policy designated to ensure safety of the blood supply.

This position is a technical supervisor and, as such, is subject to the corresponding qualification requirements of DOD's Clinical Laboratory Improvement Program, specifically Chapter 12-25, and 12-26(k),

  • Accredited bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science or medical technology and have either:  1) at least 4 years of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing within the specialty of immunohematology, OR 2) successfully completed a CAHEA accredited school as a Specialist in blood banking.
  • Accredited master's degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science or medical technology and have either: 1) at least 2 years of laboratory training or experience, or both, in a high complexity testing within the specialty of immunohematology, OR 2) successfully completed a CAHEA accredited school as a Specialist in blood banking.
  • Accredited doctoral degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science or medical technology and have either:  1) at least 1 year of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing within the specialty of immunohematology, OR 2) successfully completed a CAHEA accredited school as a Specialist in blood banking.
  • Active MD, DO, or DPM license awarded by any state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U. S. Virgin Islands; AND privileged to practice medicine in a DOD medical treatment facility; AND have at least one year of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing for the specialty in immunohematology.
  • Active MD or DO license awarded by any state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U. S. Virgin Islands; AND privileged to practice medicine in a DOD medical treatment facility; AND certification in clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology or the American Osteopathic Board of Pathology or possess qualifications that are equivalent to those required for such certification.
  • Served as commissioned officer in the Armed Forces; AND have an accredited bachelor's in a chemical, physical, or biological science, or medical technology; AND have at least three years of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing within the specialty of immunohematology; AND I am certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology, the National Certification Agency for Medical Laboratory Personnel, or other board deemed comparable.
  • PART TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE:  Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work.  You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

REQUIREMENTS:
