JOB SUMMARY:

Civilian employees serve a vital role in supporting the Army mission. They provide the skills that are not readily available in the military, but crucial to support military operations. The Army integrates the talents and skills of its military and civilian members to form a Total Army.

About the Position: 

Letterkenny Army Depot (LEAD) is subordinate to the U.S.Army Aviation and Missile Life Cycle Management Command.  There are 7 TERM vacancies for this announcement.  All positions are located in the Directorate of Industrial Operations, Letterkenny Army Depot (LEAD), Chambersburg, PA.

Set up and operate various types of welding equipment and use manual welding techniques to cut out and remove damaged parts and body areas, straighten and strengthen structural parts, weld cuts and breaks and perform a variety of tasks incidental to welding duties. Perform inert gas shielded welding, i.e. MIG/TIG, in the repair, rebuild, or modification of bodies, chassis and parts of vehicle assemblies. Determine proper method of repair, develops less complex templates, jigs and dies, selects and sets up jigs, fixtures and equipment, set up and assemble parts to be welded, selects type and size of rod, size of tip and proper heat range necessary to weld, cut, bend and shape a variety of metals such as ballistic steel and aluminum, cast iron, cast steel, magnesium mild steel and stainless steel. Make welds in flat, horizontal, vertical and over-head positions. Perform vehicle body repair work such as straightening metal structural and body parts; removing creases and dents; and removing, repairing and replacing parts of various shapes and gauges of metal. Repair work requires cutting, brazing tacking, shrinking, stretching and filling in dented areas. Install new parts and applies required modifications and fabricates less complex sheet metal items using equipment such as shears, band saws, box and pan brakes and drill presses.

Screen Out Element:  Your resume must indicate your overall knowledge, skills, and abilities and/or training to independently perform the duties of a Welding Worker as stated in the duties of the position without more than normal supervision.  (SCREEN OUT)

 

There is no specific length of training or experience required.  However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the work of a Welding Worker without more than ormal supervision.

 

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) to perform the duties of the position in the following areas:

2.  Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)

3.  Use of Measuring Instructions

4.  Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading)

Physical effort: Work requires standing, walking, stooping, bending, climbing and crawling. Works in cramped and awkward positions. Handles objects weighing up to and, occasionally, greater than 50 pounds in setting up and performing work.

 

Working Conditions:  Works indoors, outdoors, both in shop and TDY sites in varied weather. Work is usually performed on concrete floors or in equipment being repaired. Work areas may be dirty, noisy and smoky. Exposed to a variety of potentially hazardous situations that are considered in evaluation of the job. Subject to discomfort from wearing protective equipment.
