About the Agency

This position is located in the Federal Trade Commission, Bureau of Competition, Health Care Division.  The division is charged with investigating and litigating potential antitrust violations involving health care. The staff also responds to numerous requests for guidance from health care industry participants, through, among other things, the advisory opinion letter process, and through the issuance of statements on enforcement policy. This position is not included in the bargaining unit.


As an attorney in the Health Care Division you will perform a variety of legal duties relating to cases or legal issues of extreme difficulty.  Often the work of the division staff includes advisory functions related to antitrust enforcement policy under the various statutes enforced by the Commission.  A successful staff member has interest in and the ability to deal with both legal analysis and economic and practical business issues arising from the matters under investigation. More specifically you will:

Make initial determinations as to whether matters should be investigated;

Plan and conduct investigations of potentially anticompetitive conduct in the health care field, often working as a member of a team;

Based on evidence collected during investigation, and on applicable legal precedents, determine whether a matter should be pursued or closed;

Prepare for trial and litigate or negotiate settlement of those matters; and

Perform special assignments as directed.
