The salary range indicated reflects the locality pay adjustments for the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan area.
The incumbent of this position will work a fixed work schedule and may occasionally be required to work late evening and/or weekend hours on Library of Congress photographic assignments.
This is a non-supervisory, bargaining unit position.
Relocation expenses will not be authorized for the person(s) selected under this vacancy announcement.
The Photographer position is located in the Public Affairs Office of the Office of Communications, Office of the Librarian. The incumbent provides photographic, digital, archival and related services for the Office of Communications, Public Affairs Office and the Library of Congress institution. The incumbent works independently to carry out internal press-photography and other Library assignments during and after standard working hours; provides high quality original photographs as well as photographic and digital reproductions and text captions; and understands and utilizes the capabilities and limitations of available equipment to the subject materials being photographed.
The incumbent is responsible for taking still or motion pictures of subjects primarily in color using standard photographic skills. Operates a variety of specialized photographic equipment, such as medium-and large-format cameras and digital cameras, as well as computer software used to manipulate, distribute and archive digital images. Photographs different types of subjects under varying conditions, ranging from people in action to closeups of rare books and other materials. Drawing on a comprehensive knowledge of the art of photography and the subject matter and an understanding of the objectives, the incumbent develops and designs the approach to the photographic and artistic aspects of the assignment. Adapts photographic equipment to compensate for physical stresses and special lighting and working conditions and computer requirements.
The incumbent is responsible for creating images that present subjects and or materials in an aesthetically pleasing manner and that tell the Library of Congress's stories for such publications as the Gazette, Library of Congress Magazine (LCM), brochures, posters, the Library's website, print and web-based advertisements, and other publications, as well as social media.
Develops original concepts for publications, presentation materials and public affairs support such as electronic press kits and photo releases that present to the public the ideas or image desired by the Library, that evoke desired responses from viewers, or that reduce the cost of production, installation, or maintenance of the visual product; transform spoken or written descriptions of items, processes, issues or events into visual representations.
Uses standard approaches to perform a variety of duties related to special projects involving administrative or program issues for the Office of Communications, If time permits, conducts extensive research and compilation of data from diverse sources, Extracts and assembles information, conducts and develops reports and photographic presentations.
