The primary focus of this position will be Linux server administration in a large, heterogeneous data center. The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge in Tuning Linux operating systems for various workloads, fully understand volume management concepts, including storage (SAN and NAS) and x86 computing platforms (rack mounted and/or blade server).

The salary range indicated reflects the locality pay adjustments for the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan area.
The incumbent of this position may elect to work a flextime, compflex, or maxiflex work schedule.
This is a non-supervisory, bargaining unit position.

Develops policies, procedures, and strategies ensuring optimization and integration in the installation, configuration, and maintenance of the Linux operating systems environment Library-wide. Analyzes the effectiveness of operating and network systems and develops fine-tuning techniques to improve application and Linux operating system performance. Oversees coordinated efforts to plan for and acquire Information Technology (IT) systems for Library-wide automated systems.
Manages and provides authoritative guidance for Library-wide IT systems. Provides expert technical advice to system administrators throughout the Library. Identifies and controls all IT system hardware and software configuration. Develops technical standards and procedures for IT system development, implementation, and management. Establishes performance management metrics and evaluates overall performance against relevant standards.
Analyzes long-range equipment needs of complex information systems. As a recognized technical expert in computer hardware, performs analysis of equipment needs for long-range organizational information technology planning, taking into consideration rapidly changing equipment technology and requirements, costs and benefits, and mission needs. Participates in the development of operation plans. Assists in planning, directing and coordinating the implementation and execution of approved policies, programs and services related to IT systems. Reviews and evaluates operations to appraise effectiveness of policies and programs. Determines deficiencies and takes or recommends appropriate action.
Serves as a recognized technical authority for new and advanced computer systems software, with particular emphasis on the Linux platform. Exercises considerable judgment and ingenuity in advocating the benefits of implementing business-driven quality and process improvement approaches. Participates in developing operation plans. Assists in planning, directing and coordinating the implementation and execution of approved policies, programs and services related to IT systems. Reviews and evaluates operations to appraise effectiveness of policies and programs. Determines deficiencies and takes or recommends appropriate action.
Oversees or coordinates the preparation of testing and implementation plans. Develops test plans and test scripts. Oversees others in the implementation of those plans and scripts. Sets up a problem reporting mechanism for use by the application team involved in testing.
Oversees the migration of systems to the production environment and monitors for stability, accuracy, and performance. Meets with programmers and functional area specialists to coordinate work and resolve problems. Meets with vendor technical representatives to resolve technical issues, and to implement and coordinate new releases.
Conducts IT strategic planning and project management activities. Facilitates teams in conducting analyses, developing goals, objectives, and strategies, and in other strategic, tactical, and business planning activities. Develops, and implements project management procedures, tools, templates, activities, and infrastructure. Provides project management training and assistance to technical staff.
