About the Agency
Finance internships are available in two related departments: Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) and Structured Finance (SF). Small and Medium Enterprises supports American investment abroad by providing long-term small to medium size loans to small and middle market clients in a wide variety of projects, while Structured Finance provides larger, long-term loans to finance large infrastructure projects.
There are two groups in SME Finace with specialized functions; the Enterprise Development Network (“EDN”) and SRI Finance. These groups reach out worldwide to connects SMEs and Socially Responsible Finance and Impact Investing, respectively.
In either department, interns serve as junior financial analysts and can be involved in all stages of project development as part of a project team. Interns may review applications for financing and financial statements, build or analyze models of projected project cash flows, research various policy issues, prepare country economic and political risk analyses, prepare credit reviews of outstanding loans and work with Investment Officers to review and monitor financial transactions.

As an intern you will assist with the development of and execution of SRI Finance which is a cross product specialty group in the new, emerging field of socially responsible investing. Socially Responsible Investment Finance is a specialty group offering customized finance, fund and insurance products to the education, information, communications and technology (ICT), health, water and sanitation sectors. It provides direct and indirect support projects, whether through direct origination or linkages created or assisted by OPIC through consultation, education and outreach. By providing debt financing, OPIC assists to jump start or expand endeavors undertaken by philanthropic investors. Additional financial leverage for scarce capital can bring projects to scale with equipment, facilities, and/or working capital to reach the critical mass necessary to produce predictable and sustainable cash flow for the future, thereby empowering people in developing countries to build better futures.
SRI Finance works closely with the Enterprise Development Network (EDN). EDN is a strategic alliance between OPIC and the private sector designed to identify and fund developmental, creditworthy investment projects in emerging markets. The SRI intern will coordinate with the EDN intern assisting in all aspects of developing EDN including gathering information, writing research papers, modeling financial information, communicating with private and public firms, and processing deals. The intern will be exposed to various stages of project development and a broad range of issues related to OPIC's credit approval process and strategic planning. Interns serve as junior financial analysts and can be involved in all stages of project development as part of a Project Team. Interns may review applications for financing and financial statements, build or analyze models of projected project cash flows, research various policy issues, prepare country economic and political risk analyses, prepare credit reviews of outstanding loans and work with Investment Officers to review and monitor problem accounts.
