This position is located in the Technical Services (Cataloging) Section of the Navy Department Library (NDL), a branch of the Naval history and Heritage Command (NHHC).  This Section is responsible for analyzing, organizing, and providing the orderly access and retrieval of print, non-print, and electronic materials to personnel of the naval establishment, the Department of Defense (DOD) and its subordinate services, to other government agencies, and to the public (writers, historians, veterans, etc.).

·         Performs original, descriptive, and modified cataloging of naval, maritime and related subjects using established local practices and national and international standards

·         Assists in the preparation of administrative reports and maintains statistics

·         Supports library technicians assigned to copy cataloging, database maintenance, processing materials, and maintaining serials

To be eligible for the GS-1099-05, you must meet the following level of education requirement:


You must have completed 4 academic years of post-high school study leading to a bachelor's degree or completed 4 academic years of pre-professional study.


To be eligible for the GS-1099-07, you must meet the following level of education requirement: 


You must have completed 1 academic year of graduate level education, have a bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement, or have completed 5 academic years of pre-professional study.


Superior Academic Achievement is based on:


1)  Class Standing - Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.


2)  Grade Point Average (G.P.A.) - Applicants must have a grade-point average of:

a.  3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or

b.  3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.

3)  Honor Society Membership 


You are eligible if you are currently accepted for enrollment or enrolled in an accredited college (including 4-year colleges/universities); advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a degree in library science.

·       Interns may be converted to a permanent position (or, in some limited circumstances, to a term position lasting 1-4 years) within 120 days of successful completion of the program.

·       To be eligible for conversion, Interns must:

o   Be a US Citizen

o   Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program

o   Complete their degree or certificate requirements

o   Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted

o   Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant’s Agreement, and

o   Perform their job successfully




Any of the following educational institutions or curricula that have been accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the secretary of the U.S. Department of Education:

(i) A 4-year college or university;

(ii) A graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school)


Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the qualification requirements, if the applicant can provide documentation indicating that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
